Description
Martha Vist Carbine is one of the main antagonists of Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn, a powerful businesswoman who serves as the acting head of the Vist Foundation after the death of her brother, Cardeas Vist. She was born in UC 0041 as the granddaughter of Syam Vist, the founder of the Vist Foundation. Her early life was marked by tragedy when her grandfather killed her father, an event that deeply shaped her ruthless and calculating personality. Within the Vist family, she was noted for her sharp character and ambitious nature, which was considered rare for a woman of her time.

To maintain the Vist Foundation’s influence over the Earth Sphere, Martha married Melanie Hue Carbine, the chairman of Anaheim Electronics, thereby strengthening ties with the major arms manufacturer. Through this marriage, she became known as the Empress of the Moon, a title that reflected her control over the Carbine family and its vast corporate network. Her alliance with Anaheim Electronics gave her significant sway over both the arms industry and high-ranking Earth Federation officials.

Martha’s motivations revolved around preserving the Vist Foundation’s power and preventing the opening of Laplace’s Box, a secret that could destabilize the Earth Sphere. She opposed her brother Cardeas’s plan to reveal that truth, believing that doing so would undermine the Foundation’s legacy. Following Cardeas’s death, orchestrated through her manipulation of her nephew Alberto Vist, Martha seized full control of the Foundation and directed a destructive campaign to keep Laplace’s Box under family control.

In the story, Martha plays a key role in the Laplace Incident of UC 0096. She exerts influence through corporate leverage, commanding assets of Anaheim Electronics, the Vist Foundation, and Federation agencies. She takes control of the RX-0 Unicorn Gundam and its pilot Banagher Links, relocating operations to the Augusta Newtype Laboratory, where she subjects the captured Cyber Newtype Marida Cruz to psychological reconditioning. She provides Alberto with schematics for the RX-0 Banshee and manipulates Marida into piloting it against the Unicorn. The climax of her involvement occurs aboard the Garuda-class vessel, where she attempts to extract the coordinates for Laplace’s Box from Banagher through coercion and deception. When that fails, she proposes using the Gryps 2 colony laser to destroy the colony Magallanica and prevent the box from being opened. Her plan is thwarted, and she is arrested by Bright Noa.

After the incident, Martha is tried and imprisoned for her role, but she remains dignified and confident throughout her confinement. In UC 0097, during the Phoenix Hunt, she is broken out of prison by the private army of Luio & Co., who seek her cooperation concerning the testing of the RX-0 Unicorn Gundam Unit 3 Phenex. This provides her a chance to regain her lost reputation.

Key relationships define Martha’s role. With her brother Cardeas, she shares a fundamental ideological conflict: he wants to reveal the truth to correct the flaws of the Universal Century, while she prioritizes preserving the Foundation’s power. She manipulates her nephew Alberto, acting as a maternal figure during his youth while exploiting his hatred of his father to push him toward patricide, though she never fully trusts Alberto’s abilities. She views her illegitimate nephew Banagher primarily as a tool to access Laplace’s Box, showing little regard for his well-being until his value as the Unicorn’s pilot becomes apparent. Her marriage to Melanie Hue Carbine is strategic, built on mutual business respect, with Martha’s sharper personality complementing her husband’s more reserved nature. Her treatment of Marida Cruz reveals her callousness; she subjects the young woman to psychological conditioning, justifying it as liberation from a flawed male-dominated society.

Martha’s notable abilities lie in her intellect, strategic thinking, and political acumen. She excels at wielding corporate and institutional authority rather than personal combat, commanding Anaheim Electronics security teams, a Garuda-class flagship, and experimental mobile suits such as the RX-0 Banshee. Her sharp negotiating skills and willingness to use underhanded methods make her a formidable antagonist, and her understanding of both mobile suit technology and psychological warfare allows her to manipulate others effectively. Throughout her imprisonment and later release, she maintains her elegance and dignified demeanor, reinforcing her reputation as a cold and calculating figure.
