TV Special
Description
Galvez appears in the 2002 television special Lupin III: Episode 0 First Contact as a wealthy and powerful millionaire who also operates as a mafia boss. His most prized possession is the Clam of Helmeth, a mysterious and indestructible green cylinder of Japanese origin that contains a scroll with instructions on how to forge an incredibly strong metal. This object is the central treasure around which the story’s events revolve, and Galvez is determined to protect it at all costs.

Galvez is portrayed as a cigar-chomping crime lord who commands significant resources and a small army of henchmen. At the start of the narrative, he has employed the expert gunman Daisuke Jigen to help guard the Clam of Helmeth. His right-hand man and primary enforcer is a lethal operative named Shade, who acts as his dragon and carries out his most violent orders. Galvez’s personality is that of a classic, intimidating underworld figure; he is accustomed to control and does not tolerate failure or betrayal. His motivation throughout the special is straightforward: to retain possession of his valuable treasure and eliminate or outmaneuver the various thieves and rivals who seek to take it from him.

His primary role in the story is that of an initial antagonist and the catalyst that brings several main characters together for the first time. Because he holds the Clam of Helmeth, he draws the attention of the master thief Arsène Lupin III, a rival thief named Brad, and Brad's partner Fujiko Mine. After Brad successfully steals the cylinder but is subsequently murdered by Shade, the ensuing conflict over the Clam and the key to open it entangles Lupin, Fujiko, Jigen, the samurai Goemon Ishikawa XIII, and Inspector Koichi Zenigata. Galvez, feeling betrayed, also becomes a target of Fujiko’s schemes for revenge. He plots with Fujiko to use Lupin to steal the necessary key, intending to take it from him afterwards in a classic MacGuffin delivery service plan, but Lupin is aware of the ruse.

In terms of character development, Galvez does not undergo a significant personal arc. He remains a consistent obstacle whose primary function in the narrative is to be a wealthy, powerful crime boss whose treasure serves as the plot device that forces the future Lupin III gang into their first encounters with one another. His defeat and the loss of his treasure mark the end of his relevance to the story. A notable scene involving Galvez demonstrates his arrogant and humorless nature: when he attempts to shoot Lupin, he is humiliated by a trick gun that fires a spring-loaded boxing glove into his own face, an event that makes even his own employee, Jigen, break into laughter.

Galvez does not possess any superhuman or unique personal abilities. His power is derived entirely from his wealth, his position as a mafia boss, his hired gunman Jigen, and his loyal and deadly henchman Shade. He is depicted as a traditional, cigar-smoking crime lord whose influence and resources make him a formidable opponent. However, he is ultimately outmatched by the combined cunning and skills of Lupin and the others, leading to the failure of his plans and the end of his role as a threat.
