Description
Michiru Kaiou is the civilian identity of Sailor Neptune, a Guardian from the planet Neptune introduced in the third story arc of the Sailor Moon series. As a teenage schoolgirl and a prodigious violinist, she first appears attending Mugen Academy alongside her partner Haruka Tenou and the younger Hotaru Tomoe. Unlike the Inner Sailor Guardians, Michiru awakened to her powers independently rather than through the moon cats. On the ancient Silver Millennium, she was the princess of Neptune, residing in Triton Castle, and was among the Outer Guardians charged with defending the Solar System from external threats.

Michiru is characterized by her elegant, sophisticated, and calm demeanor. She is exceptionally polite and graceful, often described as the ideal princess by those around her, yet she can also display a cold, sharp anger when the situation demands it. She deeply dislikes being patronized and will not indulge others who attempt to do so. Her intelligence manifests through her artistic talents, notably her exceptional skill as a violinist, as well as her abilities in swimming and painting. Her favorite food is sashimi, her least favorite is kikurage mushrooms, and her favorite color is marine blue.

Her primary motivation is her unwavering dedication to her duty as a Sailor Guardian. She takes a black-and-white, pragmatic approach to her mission, often prioritizing the protection of the planet over personal connections or alliances with the Inner Senshi. This sense of duty is shared with Haruka Tenou, with whom she has the closest bond. The two are explicitly depicted as romantic partners and lovers, fighting side by side in nearly every battle. Throughout the series, Michiru develops from a somewhat distant and independent figure into a more integrated member of the larger Sailor Guardian team, though she never wavers in her commitment to her role.

As Sailor Neptune, her powers are based on the ocean and the sea. She can generate and manipulate seawater, possesses precognitive abilities that allow her to sense evil presences (often remarking that the sea is stormy), and wields the Deep Aqua Mirror, one of the three Talismans. The Deep Aqua Mirror reveals truths, can be used to locate enemies or create protective barriers, and serves as her primary tool in battle. She transforms using the phrase Neptune Planet Power, Make Up, initially using a Lip Rod, and later gains the Super Sailor Neptune form after obtaining her Neptune Crystal. In the manga, she additionally ascends to an Eternal Sailor Neptune form. Her attacks are ocean-based, and she also demonstrates astral projection in some storylines. Throughout her appearance in Sailor Moon S and subsequent arcs, Michiru Kaiou remains a capable, composed, and deeply dedicated Guardian whose elegance and power are matched only by her fierce resolve.
