Description
Jonathan Washington is a supporting character in the story, initially appearing as a target for the bounty hunter duo. At the beginning of the narrative, he has just skipped bail on drug smuggling charges, which leads to his capture by Rally Vincent. However, this charge is a misdirection, as his true criminal enterprise is far more significant: Washington is a key operative in Edward Haints' gun-running ring, managing an entire warehouse filled with illicit firearms.
His role in the plot deepens when it is revealed that he is not merely a criminal but a potential liability to the conspiracy. After his arrest, he becomes a vital witness for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF) and is placed in a protective safehouse outside Chicago. From this point, his primary motivation shifts from self-preservation to a desperate need to survive, as he realizes he knows too much. He correctly fears for his life because he is aware that George Black, the head of the ATF's Chicago office, is secretly a partner of Haints and has already dispatched a hitman to silence him.
In a last-ditch effort to avoid his fate, Washington tries to persuade Rally Vincent to help him escape the safehouse, but she refuses. Demonstrating a shrewd and resourceful nature even in the face of death, he manages to leave behind a cleverly disguised piece of evidence. He gives May Hopkins a fake Rolex watch and a scrap of paper with the supposed address of his daughter. In reality, the paper contains an internet address, and the back of the watchband's latch has an engraved access code that provides the shipping dates for the gun-running operation. This act proves to be his most significant contribution to the story, as the hidden data becomes a crucial lead for Rally and May.
Ultimately, his warnings prove true. He meets his end when Natasha Radinov, a professional assassin, uses a copied cardkey and access code to infiltrate the ATF safehouse and assassinate him along with the agents guarding him. Despite his criminal background as a heavy weapons dealer, Washington is portrayed not as a primary antagonist but as a desperate man caught in a larger conspiracy, whose fear and final actions serve as a key catalyst for the ensuing investigation.
