João Batista
Description
João Batista was the artistic name of a Brazilian voice actor who built an extensive career in dubbing, particularly active from the 1970s until his death in 2001. He was born in Rio de Janeiro as João Jacy Baptista Pereira and was the son of journalist and radio novel adapter Jacy Monteiro. He began his dubbing career in the early 1970s at the Herbert Richers studio in Rio de Janeiro. Due to his deep voice, he was frequently cast to portray middle-aged and older characters. In the early 1990s, he moved to São Paulo, where he worked at several studios, including Gota Mágica, Álamo, and Parisi Vídeo. It was upon his move to São Paulo that he adopted the professional name João Batista.
His voice became well-known for a wide array of characters in animation, live-action series, and films. He is remembered for his work in anime, where he provided voices for several significant roles. These included the first voice of the villain Cell, the first voice of Rei Cutelo, and the second voice of Senhor Enma Daioh in the various iterations of the Dragon Ball Z series and films. His other notable anime credits include Kouzou Fuyutsuki in Neon Genesis Evangelion, President Joe in Saber Marionette J Again, and various characters in Samurai X (Rurouni Kenshin). He also lent his voice to the character of the Rei in the anime Popolocrois Monogatari.
Beyond anime, João Batista's dubbing portfolio was vast. He was the first and most memorable voice of the hamburger-loving character Dudu in the Popeye cartoons dubbed in the 1970s. He also voiced characters like Shendu in the first two seasons of As Aventuras de Jackie Chan, and in Bob Esponja (SpongeBob SquarePants), he was the singer for the opening theme's captain and provided the first voice for the character Bolha Suja (Dirty Bubble). In live-action series, he was the voice of Jock Ewing, the family patriarch in the hit series Dallas, and Uncle Jesse in Os Gatões (The Dukes of Hazzard). His film work included dubbing actors such as Eli Wallach in the second dubbing of Sete Homens e Um Destino (The Magnificent Seven) and Richard Pryor in Loucos de Dar Nó.
João Batista passed away on December 25, 2001, due to a cardiac arrest. One of his final works, the voice of Senhor Enma Daioh for the film Dragon Ball Z: Uma Nova Fusão! Goku e Vegeta, was released in Brazilian cinemas shortly after his death in early 2002.
