Description
Rain Mikamura is a central character in the anime Mobile Fighter G Gundam. She grew up in the space colony of Neo Japan as the daughter of Dr. Mikamura, the developer of the Shining Gundam, and was a childhood friend of Domon Kasshu. Originally a medical student at a colony university, Rain was recalled to Neo Japan and assigned, without her consent, to serve as Domon's partner and mechanic during the 13th Gundam Fight. She is about twenty years old, with long brown hair and blue eyes, and she combines formal medical training with considerable skill as an engineer and electronics expert.
Rain is a kind, clever, and resilient young woman who becomes Domon's closest ally and supporter. She is compassionate and empathetic, rarely turning away from anyone in need, and she carries a strong sense of responsibility. Her patience is often tested by Domon's brash and impulsive nature, and she frequently acts as the voice of reason for the Neo Japan team. Although she disapproves of the Neo Japan committee's willingness to exploit Domon's painful past for the sake of the tournament, she remains devoted to her duties and to supporting him. She is also a person of hidden depth, uncertain at times whether she can express her feelings for Domon in a way he would understand.
Rain's primary motivation is to support Domon in his quest and to keep the Neo Japan campaign viable, even as Domon becomes consumed by his search for his brother Kyoji. Over time, her sense of duty expands into a personal mission of responsibility. After discovering that her own father helped orchestrate a plot to steal the Devil Gundam and ruin the reputation of Domon's father, Dr. Raizo Kasshu, Rain is deeply shaken and driven to make amends.
Within the story, Rain serves as the mechanic responsible for maintaining the Shining Gundam and later the God Gundam, and she provides both technical and emotional support throughout the Gundam Fight. She is also capable of taking a more active role, piloting a mobile fighter when the situation demands it. Her father eventually builds the Rising Gundam as a partner machine for the God Gundam, mirroring Rain's own role as Domon's partner. Late in the series, it is revealed that Rain is the ideal pilot for the Devil Gundam, and she is forcibly taken to serve as its Core Life Unit. The Devil Gundam feeds on her guilt and merges with the Neo Japan colony. Domon confronts the merged colony, discovers Rain at its core, and frees her through a confession of love. Together they destroy the Devil Gundam, and Rain returns to Earth with Domon at the end of the story.
Her relationship with Domon is the emotional center of the narrative. The two have known each other since childhood, and their reunion rekindles a deep bond that develops from a strained professional arrangement into mutual trust and love. Rain balances Domon's single-minded focus and stays by his side even when his temper flares, while Domon grows to recognize how much he needs her, especially after learning the truth about her family's role in his tragedy. Their partnership is tested when Rain briefly sides with Neo Germany after a disagreement with Domon, but she realizes she cannot abandon him and returns. Rain also has a complicated relationship with Allenby Beardsley, a fellow Gundam Fighter who grows close to Domon. Rain feels jealousy and tries to keep them apart, yet she still cares for Allenby and takes action to save her when Allenby loses control of herself. Her relationship with her father is initially warm but becomes strained and painful once she learns of his involvement with the Devil Gundam; despite her anger, she remains at his side when he acknowledges his mistakes and tries to make amends.
Rain's growth is marked by her shift from a supporting figure into someone willing to take direct and costly action. She starts the series as a reluctant participant in the Gundam Fight, gradually becomes a true partner and confidante, and ultimately confronts the consequences of her family's past when she is taken over by the Devil Gundam. When the Devil Gundam controls her, her body is transformed by DG cells into a metallic silver form, reflecting how she is forced to become Domon's opponent. Domon's love frees her from that control, and the experience allows her to leave behind the guilt that had weighed on her.
Rain is highly capable in several fields. She is a trained mechanic and doctor, able to keep the Shining Gundam and God Gundam in fighting condition and to treat Domon and his allies after battles. She is a skilled marksman with a pistol, able to disarm an enemy from a distance, and she carries a compact accessory that functions as a multi-purpose tool for communication, protection, and blinding light, as well as an earring that emits a paralyzing light. Her technical expertise extends to more unusual feats, such as using a brainwave transmitter to provide the crucial link Domon needed to complete the transition to the Burning Gundam. In emergencies, she is also a competent pilot, having operated the Shining Gundam and flown the Rising Gundam in battle.
