Description
In the original video animation Golgo 13: Queen Bee, the protagonist is the professional assassin known as Golgo 13, who also uses the alias Duke Togo. His true age, birthplace, and real identity are a complete mystery, with no consensus existing among the world’s intelligence agencies. He is a consummate professional who works for hire, accepting dangerous and seemingly impossible assassination contracts from clients who can afford his fee.
Golgo 13 possesses a profoundly quiet and reserved personality. He speaks only when necessary, showing little to no visible emotion whether he is preparing for a job, undergoing an assassination, or navigating everyday life. He is neither a hero nor a conventional villain; instead, he operates strictly as a highly skilled mercenary, willing to eliminate anyone who might threaten to expose his identity or compromise his mission. He lives a life of self-imposed isolation, finding comfort only in rare, purely physical sexual encounters with which he forms no emotional attachment.
Within the story of Queen Bee, Golgo 13 is hired by Thomas Waltham, a campaign manager for a Democratic U.S. presidential nominee, to kill a woman known as Queen Bee. She is the second-in-command of a South American terrorist group and is believed to be plotting to assassinate the candidate. Golgo finds the initial premise of the job too simple, which leads him to seek the true connection behind the contract. He encounters Queen Bee, whose real name is Sonia, and their relationship becomes a complex web of hunter and prey. He initially lets her escape, and they later form a temporary and uneasy alliance to fend off a surprise military attack on her base, fighting side by side. In the film’s climax, after the presidential candidate’s suicide, Golgo fulfills his original contract by shooting Sonia at her father’s grave. In her final moments, she reveals she has deposited money in his account for a new hit on the man who hired him, a job Golgo accepts, ultimately killing Waltham and his associates.
The character shows little traditional development, remaining a stoic and unchanging force. His primary relationship is with his target, Queen Bee. Their interactions are defined by professional calculation, a mutual wariness of each other’s capabilities, and a series of sexual encounters that are tactical and transactional rather than romantic. This dynamic reveals his unshakeable focus on his mission while his temporary collaboration with her suggests a pragmatic recognition of a common threat, not a deviation from his solitary nature.
Golgo 13’s most notable abilities revolve around his unparalleled precision and marksmanship. He most frequently completes his jobs using a customized, scoped M16 rifle. Beyond his skill with firearms, he is a highly resourceful operative capable of navigating high-stakes political and criminal situations, uncovering layers of intrigue where others see only a simple assignment. He is a master of observation and deduction, refusing to accept a job at face value when he senses a deeper truth. He is also a capable combatant in close quarters, able to survive a severe knife wound and continue his work. The character is defined by his absolute professionalism, his detachment from the moral consequences of his actions, and his role as a narrative catalyst, forcing the desperate and corrupt nature of those around him to come to light.
