TV Special
Description
In the 1996 television special Lupin III: The Secret of Twilight Gemini, the character of Arsene Lupin III is presented in a manner that some observers have noted as a distinct variation from his more common portrayals. This version of the master thief is often described as a gentleman thief and a chivalrous pervert, leaning further toward the role of a noble rogue than a simple lecher. The narrative is set in motion when Lupin is summoned by a dying old underworld figure named Dalune, who presents him with half of a legendary diamond called the Twilight, claiming it is the key to a vast treasure hidden in Morocco.

The driving force for Lupin in this story is initially the promise of this great treasure, but his motivations evolve significantly as the plot unfolds. He becomes more devoted to aiding a young Geltic woman named Lara than to securing the fortune for himself, demonstrating a strong altruistic streak. This is illustrated by his willingness to sink into quicksand with her rather than abandon her to her fate, and by his eventual decision to cherish the sentimental diamond he receives rather than cashing it in. His personality reflects this shift; he is less the "drooling lech" of other adventures and more focused on rendering chivalrous aid. While he does have an intimate encounter with Fujiko Mine, his relationship with Lara is centered on mutual respect rather than attraction. He is depicted as clever and capable, but also more grounded and fallible than in some other films, as he loses fights and finds himself powerless, relying on his companions for support.

Lupin's role in the story is that of the catalyst who unravels a complex, multi-generational mystery. He must navigate a tangled web involving not only his perennial rival, Inspector Zenigata, but also a band of assassins led by the whip-wielding Sadachiyo, and a corrupt police commissioner with his own dark agenda. His key relationships are central to the plot. His partnership with his longtime companion Daisuke Jigen is present, though Jigen's role is somewhat reduced. Goemon Ishikawa XIII appears as a deus ex machina, his personal vendetta against Sadachiyo intertwining with the main quest. Fujiko is present and, in a departure from her typical duplicitous nature, is portrayed as more of a straightforward partner. Even his relationship with Zenigata is defined by their friendly rivalry, and the inspector can be convinced to look the other way when Lupin is working for a just cause.

Throughout the special, Lupin shows a degree of character development, moving from a self-interested treasure hunter to a figure who helps a displaced people regain their heritage. He is instrumental in fulfilling Dalune's vow to reunite the two halves of the Twilight Gemini and, in doing so, helps restore the Geltic tribe's future. In terms of abilities, Lupin demonstrates his usual repertoire of skills. He is a master of disguise, successfully impersonating a police officer and a local townsman. He is resourceful and an expert at improvisation, even if the action is less superhuman and more grounded in realistic cleverness. Despite the comparatively lower-key action, he remains a highly competent thief and escape artist, capable of evading Interpol and deadly assassins alike. This particular adventure, often noted for its more serene tone and beautiful Moroccan landscapes, showcases a version of Lupin who is not only a thief but also a man of honor and sentiment.
