OVA
Description
Azusa Kanzaki is a supporting character introduced in the second episode of the Devil Hunter Yohko original video animation series. She is a young girl from a mountain village who comes from a branch family of the Mano clan, the central lineage of devil hunters. Her primary role in the story is to become the apprentice and self-proclaimed sidekick to the main protagonist, Yohko Mano.
In terms of personality, Azusa is depicted as being quite different from Yohko. While Yohko is often portrayed as a reluctant, boy-crazy, and somewhat lazy devil hunter, Azusa is enthusiastic, polite, and eager to learn. She is a very proper and helpful girl who takes her duties seriously. Her demeanor suggests she is more traditionally inclined than Yohko, as she possesses a solid knowledge of devil hunting lore and has strong domestic skills, often helping around the household. Unlike Yohko, who frequently complains about her responsibilities, Azusa shows a genuine willingness to assist and improve her abilities as a devil hunter in training.
Her motivation is straightforward and honorable. She is sent to the Mano household to be trained by Yohko, and she arrives with the clear goal of learning the family trade and becoming a fully-fledged devil hunter. She recognizes Yohko, despite her flaws, as the 108th Devil Hunter and looks up to her as a mentor. Her loyalty and dedication to her role are evident, as she actively participates in missions and even takes initiative, such as attempting to rescue Yohko when she is transported to another dimension.
The most significant relationship in Azusa's story is with Yohko Mano, whom she serves as an apprentice. Their dynamic is that of a reluctant master and an enthusiastic student, with Yohko doing her best to mentor Azusa despite lacking experience herself. Azusa is also connected to Yohko's grandmother, Madoka, who gave her a special youma bracelet, similar in function to Yohko's ring, indicating she is recognized and accepted as part of the devil hunting family.
Azusa experiences a degree of development throughout the series as she gains more experience fighting alongside Yohko. In her first appearance, she teams up with Yohko to fight spirits disturbing a construction site. She proves her bravery and commitment in later adventures, such as when she is possessed by the demon Tokima, forcing Yohko to fight her in a critical confrontation. While she begins as a novice, her role evolves from a simple trainee to a reliable partner who actively contributes to battles and missions.
Regarding her abilities, Azusa lacks the raw power that Yohko possesses but makes up for it with her knowledge and enthusiasm. Instead of the traditional youma ring worn by the main devil hunter, she wields a youma bracelet on her wrist. Her primary weapon in combat is a magical spear, referred to as the Lance of the Fuma or the Spear of Fuma. This weapon serves as her main tool for fighting supernatural enemies, allowing her to engage in combat effectively despite being a hunter in training.
