Description
The character known as Johnny in some international versions is Kyosuke Kasuga, the male protagonist of the story. He is introduced as a teenager, born on November 15, either in 1969 or 1971, who moves to a new town with his family. On the surface, Kyosuke appears to be an ordinary, somewhat average high school student, but he harbors a major secret: he and his two younger sisters are powerful espers who have inherited psychic abilities from their late mother. The family lives in constant fear of their powers being discovered, as any such incident forces them to relocate immediately to avoid exposure and exploitation.

Kyosuke possesses a wide and impressive array of psychic skills, though he primarily uses them to navigate the complications of his daily life rather than for grand heroic acts. His most common abilities include teleportation and telekinesis. He can also perform a type of uncontrolled time travel called time-slipping, typically triggered when falling from a height, manipulate mechanical devices like traffic lights, amplify his hearing, and even use self-hypnosis. On rare occasions, particularly when Madoka is in direct danger, his power manifests as a raw, destructive energy capable of shattering concrete.

Personality-wise, Kyosuke is fundamentally a kind, gentle, and good-hearted young man. He has a strong sense of justice and cares deeply about the people around him. However, his defining and most critical flaw is his extreme indecisiveness, which is the primary driver of the story's central conflict. He is awkward, lacks self-confidence, and has a deep-seated belief that he is not good enough for Madoka, whom he sees as far more mature and intelligent than himself. This insecurity, combined with his gentle nature, makes him completely incapable of being direct or honest about his romantic feelings, leading him to become a reluctant but persistent liar who tries to please everyone to avoid hurting them.

The story places Kyosuke at the heart of a complex love triangle. He meets two best friends, Madoka Ayukawa and Hikaru Hiyama, shortly after moving. He falls in love with Madoka at first sight, but Hikaru becomes his unofficial girlfriend after she develops a crush on him and actively pursues the relationship. Kyosuke's motivation throughout most of the narrative is to protect everyone's feelings, which creates an impossible situation. He cannot confess his love to Madoka, who, out of loyalty to Hikaru, often pushes him toward her friend despite her own feelings for him. Simultaneously, he cannot bring himself to break up with Hikaru for fear of shattering her heart and destroying her close friendship with Madoka. This trap of his own making forces him to constantly lie and scheme to maintain the status quo.

His most significant relationships define his journey. His feelings for Madoka are the true, constant desire of his heart, and she is the only one who can make him scold her, such as when he uses his powers to destroy her cigarette. His relationship with Hikaru is more complicated; while he genuinely cares for her as a friend, he does not share her romantic love, and his inability to reject her is the source of all his internal turmoil. At home, he acts as the responsible older brother to his sisters, Kurumi and Manami, often nagging them not to use their powers and sometimes coming to their aid.

Throughout the series, Kyosuke gradually develops from a purely indecisive character into someone who must eventually face the consequences of his actions. His growth is most visible in the concluding cinematic story, set as he prepares for university entrance exams, where he is forced to finally make a definitive choice and bring an end to the long-standing love triangle, a process that is as painful as it is necessary. Ultimately, his character arc is about learning that trying to avoid hurting others can, in the end, cause the most harm of all. In the long term, he follows in his father's footsteps, pursuing a career in photography, a field where he has notable talent.
