Description
Johnny, known as Kyosuke Kasuga in the original Japanese version, is the central protagonist of the story. He is a fifteen-year-old high school student who has recently moved to a new town with his family. On the surface, he often appears as a typical, somewhat clumsy and ordinary teenager, but this ordinariness is a carefully maintained facade. Johnny and his two younger twin sisters are the heirs to powerful psychic abilities inherited from their late mother. His personal powers include telekinesis, teleportation, self-hypnosis, and premonitory dreams, although his attempts to use these abilities often lead to unintended and complicated situations rather than providing simple solutions.

The driving motivation behind Johnny's actions is to live a normal, peaceful life and avoid drawing attention to his supernatural heritage. His family has been forced to relocate countless times because his sisters' frequent and careless use of their powers aroused the suspicions of their neighbors. This fear of being discovered and treated as a spectacle is the family's primary concern, and Johnny shares this deep-seated anxiety, leading him to be secretive and cautious. However, his personal desires often come into direct conflict with this goal. From his first day in the new city, he is captivated by a mysterious and beautiful girl he meets on a famous staircase, an event that sets the story's primary emotional arc in motion.

In the narrative, Johnny is the central point of a classic and enduring love triangle. He is immediately attracted to Madoka Ayukawa, who is known as Sabrina in some adaptations, a similarly aged girl with a complex personality that is both standoffish and gentle. Concurrently, he attracts the attention and affection of Hikaru Hiyama, a younger, cheerful, and more openly friendly girl who is also Madoka's best friend. Johnny's defining personality trait is his profound indecisiveness. He genuinely cares for Hikaru and does not wish to hurt her, but his heart belongs to Madoka. This internal conflict, mixed with his fear of confession and his tendency to create well-intentioned but disastrous lies, is the main engine of the story's comedy and drama.

The key relationships in Johnny's life extend beyond the central romantic triangle. He lives with his father and his mischievous twin sisters, whose antics frequently expose him to the risk of revealing his powers. At school, he is often accompanied by two friends whose main interests are girls and trouble. He also serves as the unknowing rival of a boy who is desperately in love with Hikaru and consequently despises Johnny. His connection with Madoka is the most significant and complex; she is the one he truly loves, and he eventually takes a part-time job at the same café where she works, simply to be near her.

Throughout the series, Johnny shows signs of emotional development. While he remains indecisive for much of the story, the underlying current of his feelings for Madoka never wavers. The trajectory of his character arc is ultimately about the necessity of making a difficult choice. This culminates not in the main television series but in the concluding theatrical film, where he must finally and directly confront the consequences of his indecision, leading to the painful but necessary act of breaking Hikaru's heart in order to be with Madoka.
