TV-Series
Description
Hayate is one of the seven Leafé Knights and holds the title of the Knight of Wind. His power is intrinsically linked to the element of air, allowing him to manipulate wind currents for various effects. Among the knights, he is considered one of the most powerful, and his weapon of choice when fused with the Prétear is the Wind Sword, a blade formed from concentrated air that can cut with incredible sharpness.

In his human guise, Hayate takes on a job that allows him to watch over Himeno Awayuki, the girl destined to become the new Prétear. He works as an assistant and groundskeeper for Himeno's father, Kaoru Awayuki, tending to the family's mansion gardens. His hobbies outside of his duties include traveling long distances by bicycle or motorcycle. He is estimated to be sixteen years of age.

Hayate's personality is initially defined by a cold, distant, and often hostile demeanor, particularly toward Himeno. He is brash, snarky, and blunt, frequently clashing with the new Prétear and refusing to acknowledge her role. This harsh exterior, however, masks a deeply troubled and guilt-ridden interior. Hayate’s behavior is a direct result of a traumatic past event involving the previous Prétear, a girl named Takako. Takako had fallen in love with Hayate, but when he was unable to reciprocate her feelings, her anguish and heartbreak caused her immense powers to turn to evil, transforming her into the feared Princess of Disaster. Hayate carries the heavy burden of believing himself to be responsible for this catastrophe, a sorrowful secret that makes him reluctant to bond with a new Prétear for fear of history repeating itself.

Despite his initial resistance, Hayate begins to test and observe Himeno, and over time, he gradually starts to accept her as the true Prétear. His feelings evolve from cold indifference to deep affection, and he ironically finds himself falling in love with her, just as Takako had with him. This romantic subplot becomes a central driving force of the narrative, as their relationship matures from insults and arguments to a genuine, caring bond. The contrast between Hayate and another knight, Sasame, is significant; while Sasame is a good listener and becomes a Knight of Darkness due to his love for Takako, Hayate is more direct and initially closed off.

Hayate’s role in the story is that of a catalyst and a primary protector. He is the first knight Himeno merges with to become the Prétear of Wind, marking the beginning of her journey. As the series progresses, his personal history and his connection to Himeno propel much of the plot, leading to the climactic confrontation with the Princess of Disaster. In the final battle, Hayate sacrifices himself to shield Himeno from the attacking Great Tree of Fenrir and dies in her arms. However, Himeno ultimately becomes the legendary White Prétear, unleashing a massive wave of Leafé that restores the land and resurrects both Hayate and Sasame. Hayate awakens to find Himeno’s lifeless body and, in a moment of pure agony and love, kisses her, which successfully restores her life. At the conclusion of the story, Hayate and Himeno are confirmed to be a couple.
