Description
Nick Carter, known in the original Japanese version as Takaya Aiba and commonly referred to by the nickname D-Boy, is the central human protagonist of the anime Tekkaman Blade, where his transformed identity is called Teknoman Blade. He comes from a family of explorers; his father, mother, twin brother, younger sister, and older brother were all part of the crew of the exploration ship Argos. During an encounter with the alien Radam, the crew was captured and forcibly converted into armored warriors known as Tekkamen. Nick Carter was saved by his father before the conversion process could fully complete, and his father launched him toward Earth in an escape pod. After drifting for six months, he burst free and engaged the Radam forces, eventually crash-landing on Earth. He was found by members of the Space Knights, the organization that defends Earth against the Radam, and soon joined their cause.

Personality wise, Nick Carter is initially introverted, hostile, and deeply mistrustful of others. He hides his past trauma and claims to have lost his memories, though this is later revealed to be a deliberate choice to avoid discussing the fate of his family. His reckless and dangerous approach to battle leads to the nickname D-Boy, short for Dangerous Boy. Over time, as he works alongside the Space Knights, he gradually opens up and forms genuine bonds. He learns to trust his comrades, develops a romantic interest in the navigator Aki, and shows a protective side toward those who resemble his lost sister. Despite his often cold exterior, he possesses a hidden heart of gold and is driven by a strong sense of duty.

His primary motivation is vengeance against the Radam for destroying his family and enslaving his relatives. He is also motivated by a desire to protect Earth and the people he comes to care about. This sense of purpose pushes him to fight even when doing so requires him to face and kill members of his own family, including his twin brother Shinya, who becomes the antagonist Tekkaman Evil, and his older brother Kengo, who becomes Tekkaman Omega, the leader of the Radam. His younger sister Miyuki also becomes a Tekkaman named Rapier, but she retains her free will like him and ultimately sacrifices herself.

In the story, Nick Carter serves as the primary weapon against the Radam. He is the only free Tekkaman with a will of his own, and his combat abilities are crucial to the Space Knights’ efforts. His role evolves from a lone avenger to a valued team member who fights alongside his allies. He is central to nearly every major battle, and his personal conflict with his family forms the emotional core of the series.

Key relationships include his bond with Aki, the navigator who becomes his love interest and emotional anchor. His friendship with the pilot Noal is significant; Noal gives him the nickname D-Boy and provides both comic relief and heartfelt support. The robot Pegas, a battle machine built to house the shards of his shattered transformation crystal, becomes his indispensable partner and ultimately sacrifices itself to protect him. His relationships with his family—particularly his twin Shinya—are fraught with tragedy. He must kill his own brother in battle, freeing him from the Radam’s mind control just before death.

Nick Carter undergoes substantial development throughout the series. He begins as a bitter, isolated figure and learns to trust and be vulnerable. The physical and mental toll of his powers forces him to confront his own mortality and the cost of his crusade. Early in the series, his transformation crystal is shattered in battle, preventing him from transforming without external aid. The Space Knights develop a support robot, Pegas, that carries the crystal shards and enables his transformation. Furthermore, he has a strict thirty-minute time limit; if he remains transformed beyond that, he loses control and becomes a berserk killing machine. Later, he gains the ability to evolve into Blaster Tekkaman mode by using technology from a Radam Tek-System plant. This form grants immense power but at severe costs: temporary blindness, progressively worsening memory loss that erases important personal memories, and a dramatically shortened lifespan. By the series’ end, after defeating Omega and destroying the Radam mothership, he is stripped of his armor and left paralyzed and completely amnesiac, and is cared for by Aki.

Notable abilities include his Teknoman armor, which provides superhuman strength, speed, durability, and flight. His signature attack is the Voltekka, a powerful energy blast fired from a shoulder cannon. In Blaster mode, his abilities are greatly enhanced, allowing him to overpower even the most formidable opponents. However, every use of Blaster mode accelerates his memory loss and brings him closer to death. He also relies heavily on the robot Pegas for transformation and combat support, especially after his crystal is broken.
