Description
Melda Dietz is a fighter pilot serving in the military of the Great Garmillas Empire, holding the rank of Lower Storm Leader in the 707th Galactic Theater Air Corps. She is stationed aboard the battlecruiser EX-178 when the ship becomes lost inside a subspace void, where it encounters the Earth battleship Yamato. She flies her Czvarke fighter to the Yamato under a flag of truce, proposing a cooperative plan to escape. The plan succeeds, but imperial warships destroy her battlecruiser, leaving her stranded aboard the Yamato as a prisoner of war.
Physically, Melda appears as a young woman who, apart from her blue skin, is strikingly similar in appearance to humans. Her age is equivalent to nineteen years in human terms. She has red hair cut in a semi-short style with a distinctive cowlick, and she favors the color red, as seen in her personal uniform and her fighter's paint scheme.
Melda is a model Garmillas soldier who deeply values honor and takes great pride in her family's long history of military service. She carries herself with a confident and dignified demeanor, never appearing intimidated even when alone aboard an enemy vessel. Her sense of honor is strict; she believes in fair combat and disdains unnecessary violence, as demonstrated when she disarms a human officer but returns the weapon, stating that such things are not the proper way for pilots to fight. Initially, she holds the typical Garmillas view that humans are an inferior species and that Earth started the war, a belief that causes significant tension among the Yamato crew. Despite her proud military bearing, she also shows a youthful and curious side, such as her enthusiastic and dramatic reaction to tasting a parfait for the first time.
Her motivations evolve significantly throughout the story. Initially, her primary goal is to survive and return to her duties as a Garmillas officer. However, her extended time aboard the Yamato exposes her to the decency and honor of her supposed enemies, particularly through the kind treatment she receives from Lieutenant Susumu Kodai. This experience plants seeds of doubt about her empire's propaganda. Upon returning to Garmillas, she witnesses the tyranny of the Imperial Guard, including the arrest of her father, Admiral Gul Dietz, on false charges. This injustice motivates her to join a growing resistance movement, where she plays an active role in liberating a prison planet and freeing her father. She eventually returns to the Yamato as a liaison and advisor, motivated by a desire to foster understanding between their peoples and to oppose the corrupt leadership of the empire.
Her key relationships are central to her character arc. Her rivalry with Ensign Akira Yamamoto is the most dynamic, beginning with mutual suspicion and hatred and eventually transforming into a deep mutual respect and friendship. Her relationship with Lieutenant Kodai is built on growing trust; he treats her with dignity as a fellow officer and a person, which helps her see humans in a new light. She is also deeply reverent toward Princess Yurisha Iscandar, reflecting the near-worshipful regard that many Garmillas have for the planet Iscandar. Her relationship with her father, Admiral Gul Dietz, is marked by a formal, professional respect that complements their familial bond.
In the story, Melda serves as a bridge between two warring cultures. She is the first Garmillas with whom humans establish direct, meaningful communication, and her presence forces the crew of the Yamato to confront their own prejudices and the propaganda of their leaders. Her personal journey from a proud soldier of an expansionist empire to a critic of its leadership and a friend to its enemies embodies the series theme of cross-cultural understanding. Later, she provides crucial intelligence about the Garmillas home system and fights alongside the Yamato's crew in the final battle. After the war, she remains on Iscandar as an attendant to Princess Yurisha, continuing to serve as a link between their worlds.
Melda is an exceptionally skilled combat pilot, proven to be the equal of the Yamato's best ace. She is also proficient in hand-to-hand combat and is known to be an excellent diver and swimmer.
