Description
Mizuki Shibata is a student at First High School, initially enrolled as a Course 2 student in Class 1-E alongside Tatsuya Shiba, Erika Chiba, and Leonhard Saijo. At the beginning of her second year, she transfers into the newly established Magic Engineering Course. She is described as a shy, gentle, and somewhat timid girl who wears eyeglasses, but she also possesses a strong sense of justice and is not afraid to speak out when she sees unfair treatment, such as when she lost her temper over Course 1 students' rude behavior on the first day of school.
Her most notable trait is a rare innate ability called Crystal Eyes, a form of spirit vision that allows her to perceive psions and pushions—the fundamental particles of magic—as visible light. This ability is extremely valuable, particularly for detecting magical anomalies or disguised entities, but it also overwhelms her senses, causing discomfort. To manage this, she wears special glasses designed to filter the constant visual input. Because of her eyes, she initially enrolled in magic school not out of a desire to become a magician but to learn how to control her vision. Over time, influenced by Tatsuya's technical expertise and encouragement, she develops a genuine interest in magic engineering and becomes motivated to pursue that field.
Mizuki is a loyal and empathetic friend. She forms a close bond with Tatsuya after meeting him on her first day, where he immediately recognized the nature of her eyes. She becomes part of his inner circle and is particularly close with Erika Chiba, whose outgoing personality helps draw Mizuki out of her shell, and Honoka Mitsui, who shares her gentle demeanor. She also develops a romantic relationship with Mikihiko Yoshida, a fellow student and practitioner of ancient magic. Her feelings for him are a source of personal growth, and Mikihiko's protective actions during a kendo incident deepen her affection for him.
Throughout the story, Mizuki's role grows from a quiet observer to an active participant in key events. During the Visitor Arc, her Crystal Eyes prove crucial in identifying Parasites—alien entities that disguise themselves as humans—by seeing the distorted forms they take. She bravely endures the terrifying visions to help Tatsuya and others locate and neutralize these threats. Her development is marked by increasing confidence in her abilities and a willingness to step outside her comfort zone, spurred by her friendships and her desire to contribute meaningfully. Despite her timid appearance, Mizuki demonstrates quiet bravery and a strong inner resolve, making her a valued member of Tatsuya's allies.
