Description
Katsumi Morikawa is a supporting character from the Cardfight!! Vanguard franchise, initially introduced as a student at Hitsue Junior High before later attending Hitsue High School. He is a self-proclaimed expert and the self-described strongest fighter at the Card Capital shop, a claim that is almost immediately contradicted by his consistent losing record. His persistent defeats have earned him the derogatory nickname "Lose-umi" among his peers, simply referred to as "loser" in some adaptations. Although his name contains the Japanese word for victory, katsu, it serves as an ironic counterpoint to his poor performance.

Morikawa possesses a loud, boastful, and proud personality, frequently boasting about his physical strength and his skills in the game. He is also highly superstitious, regularly consulting an astrology book for guidance. The character's primary motivation appears to be the desire to prove his own strength and win through his own unique methods. However, his most defining trait is an overwhelming obsession with collecting and using Grade 3 cards, which he believes to be the most powerful. This leads him to construct decks overloaded with these high-grade units while neglecting the lower grades needed for a functional strategy, a flaw that is the direct cause of his numerous losses. Beyond his passion for Grade 3s, Morikawa harbors a deep and often comical obsession with Kourin Tatsunagi, a member of the idol group Ultra-Rare, frequently "fanboying" over her and even implying his attendance at tournaments is motivated more by seeing her than by competition.

Morikawa's role in the story begins as a minor antagonist when he steals the rare Blaster Blade card from Aichi Sendou, the protagonist, and uses it as a wager in a fight against Toshiki Kai. After being defeated by Aichi, his attitude changes, and he becomes a friend and recurring ally, frequently seen accompanying Aichi and his team to various competitions as a supporter. His key relationships are primarily with his fellow students at Card Capital. He forms a close friendship with Yuta Izaki, who often finds himself on the receiving end of Morikawa's antics. He shares a quarrelsome yet friendly rivalry with the younger Kamui Katsuragi, who frequently taunts him with his "Makemi" nickname. His dynamic with Aichi evolves from bully to friend, and his jealousy is sparked when Kourin transfers to Aichi's school, leading to comedic attempts to transfer as well or even declare himself Aichi's father.

The central irony of Morikawa's character is that despite his reputation as a weak deck-builder, he is consistently shown to possess genuine and considerable talent as a fighter when using a deck he did not construct himself. When borrowing a well-balanced Nova Grappler trial deck, he achieves numerous victories, including one against Aichi. Similarly, when his teammates secretly swap his flawed deck for Toshiki Kai's powerful Kagero deck, Morikawa piloting it pushes a serious Aichi to the brink of defeat. These moments demonstrate that his core problem is his stubborn and superstitious deck-building philosophy, not a lack of skill in the game itself. In the GIRS Crisis arc, he finally adopts a single clan, Spike Brothers, but still overloads his deck with Grade 3 units. In a fight against Chrono Shindou, he uses these units to launch an efficient and aggressive offensive, pushing his opponent into a corner. However, he ultimately loses because his hand contains nothing but Grade 3 cards, leaving him unable to guard against the final attack.

A notable ability, which some fans have ironically pointed to as his true source of strength, is his exceptional draw luck. Despite his deck's improbable construction, he rarely suffers from the catastrophic "ride accidents" that would logically plague such a build, allowing him to play the game at all. His notable card is his avatar, Juggernaut Maximum, which serves as his primary ace unit.
