Description
Gear is the main protagonist from the anime and manga series World War Blue. He is a young man who hails from Marcthree Village in the Segua Kingdom, a nation locked in a long and bitter conflict with the neighboring Ninteldo Empire. Designed as a reimagining of a famous video game character, Gear is visually distinctive with his blue hair and a shirtless appearance, which complements his role as a fleet-footed warrior.
Gear's personality is defined by his strong will, impulsiveness, and a deep-seated desire for revenge. At the start of his journey, he is characterized by a single-minded need to strike back at the Ninteldo Empire after they killed his best friend, Til. This tragic event shatters his initial decision to stay out of the war and propels him toward the military. Despite his angsty and often reckless nature, he possesses a kind and forgiving heart, showing a strong protective instinct toward his sister, Nel, and his comrades. While extremely proud of his unmatched agility, he can be book-dumb and lacks strategic thinking, preferring to charge straight into battle without a plan. His philosophy of Don't Think, Feel initially leads to several defeats, but he gradually grows from a boy seeking personal vengeance into a more mature leader who wishes to end the war entirely.
Motivated initially solely by revenge, Gear joins the Segua Army to get revenge against the Ninteldo Empire for the death of Til. However, his motivations evolve as he becomes part of the Segua Kingdom's Special Forces. His primary role in the story is as the Segua Kingdom's last great hope against the dominant Ninteldo forces. As an inexperienced but immensely talented youth, he must learn to face the brutal realities of war and transform his raw power into a force capable of turning the tide of the conflict. He serves as the driving force of the narrative, often pulling off Big Damn Heroes moments to save his allies, such as when he rescues Opal from danger.
Gear’s key relationships heavily influence his development. His most important bond is with Nel, his childhood friend and surrogate younger sister, who joins the army alongside him. He also shares a belligerent sexual tension with his comrade Opal, with whom he frequently argues despite a growing mutual attraction. The veteran soldier Tejirov acts as a Big Brother Mentor to Gear, training him to control his abilities and serving as a reminder that there is Always Someone Better. Ramses, the army commander, fills a motherly role toward him. His family lineage also plays a significant role, as his father is General Alex, Segua's strongest warrior. A major traumatic event in his development occurs when he is forced to absorb his dying father to give his death meaning, a moment that pushes him into a Heroic BSoD.
Gear’s notable abilities revolve entirely around his incredible speed. Possessing super speed allows him to perform Flash Step techniques to overwhelm opponents instantly. As a member of a superhuman genetic race known as Killers, his power is not just physical; he learns to apply the energy of Action to his attacks. This allows him to develop signature techniques like the Homing Attack Dash, an always accurate attack that locks onto its target, and various wind-based martial arts moves. He prefers to fight barehanded, using his hands and legs to deliver devastating blows. As the story progresses, he undergoes intense training to combine his spirit energy with physical attacks, taking a significant Level in Badass to become one of the world's strongest warriors.
