Description
Avril Bradley is a character from the anime and novel series Gosick. She is a 14-year-old student who comes to study at Saint Marguerite Academy as an exchange student from England. Physically, Avril is recognized by her short, wavy blonde hair, blue eyes, and her notably long limbs, which give her a distinctive and energetic silhouette.

Her background is deeply connected to a legacy of exploration. She is the granddaughter of the famous explorer Lord Bradley, also known as Sir Bradley, who passed on to her a valuable heirloom: a rare and priceless postage stamp known as the Black Penny. This inheritance is meant to fund her dream of one day becoming a great adventurer herself, following in her grandfather's footsteps.

Personality-wise, Avril is consistently portrayed as bright, cheerful, and full of energy. She is an outgoing and spirited girl who loves thrilling tales of the supernatural and ghost stories, often trying to share these chilling narratives with her classmates. A playful and somewhat mischievous side emerges in her interactions with her friend, Kujo, as she enjoys teasing him and watching his startled reactions to her spooky tales. Despite her lively demeanor, she is also noted for having a more vulnerable and insecure side, particularly when it comes to her personal feelings.

Avril's introduction into the main story is unique, as the audience first encounters an impostor using her identity. The real Avril is initially a victim, having been imprisoned in a dark, abandoned warehouse by an individual named Kuiaran the Second, who sought to steal her valuable Black Penny stamp. During her captivity, she was left frightened and alone, her faint calls for help feeding a school legend about a ghost in the warehouse. She is eventually rescued by the protagonist, Kujo Kazuya, whom she comes to see as a "black-haired prince" for saving her.

Following her rescue, Avril becomes a regular part of the school community and Kujo’s life. She develops a clear romantic affection for him, frequently inviting him to go shopping, watch movies, or simply spend time together. However, Kujo remains largely oblivious to her feelings, viewing her primarily as a good friend. This unrequited affection creates a key dynamic in her relationships. She is openly envious of the deep and unique bond that Kujo shares with the reclusive genius Victorique de Blois. Avril’s admiration for Kujo and her jealousy of Victorique leads to a playful rivalry, with Victorique giving Avril the teasing nickname "stinky lizard". Despite this initial friction, Avril grows to accept Victorique, and they share moments of camaraderie, such as playfully fighting over sandwiches in the school's garden.

In terms of abilities, Avril is not an intellectual detective like Victorique. Instead, she possesses a more physical and practical skillset, notably knowing karate. Her greatest strengths are her adventurous spirit, her sociability, and her courage, which help to pull the often-somber Kujo into lighter, more normal school activities and local explorations. She is also a skilled mimic, as her mannerisms were copied so perfectly by Kuiaran that her friends could not initially tell them apart.

Over the course of the story, Avril serves as a contrast to the mystical and isolated world of Victorique, representing a more ordinary and bright school life. As World War II looms and the situation becomes dangerous for foreigners, she is forced to return to England. Before leaving, she demonstrates her enduring friendship and romantic hope by sending a letter to Kujo and Victorique sealed inside a floating bottle. In the final stages of the war, Avril takes on a role as a nurse, tending to the wounded and showing how her character has matured from a playful schoolgirl into a young woman facing a harsh reality.
