Description
Kazuya Kujō is the male protagonist of the story, a Japanese exchange student who travels to the fictional European Kingdom of Sauville in 1924 to study at the prestigious Saint Marguerite Academy. He was born on September 2, 1910, as the third son of an Imperial Japanese soldier. Growing up in the shadow of his two older brothers, who excelled in military and intellectual pursuits respectively, Kazuya struggled for recognition from a father who favored his siblings. Despite this pressure, he was a diligent student, and his academic performance led to his opportunity to study abroad.

Personality-wise, Kazuya is characterized by a kind, sincere, and respectful attitude. He is soft-spoken and consistently polite to others, carrying the honor of being from a military family with a personal code of conduct. A notable trait is his strong sense of justice and an innate desire to help anyone in trouble, particularly if a girl is in danger. He is also very protective, with a deep-seated need to shield others from harm. While generally patient, he can become blunt or careless with his words when annoyed. Kazuya is not a genius detective; he often acts as an audience surrogate, being perceptive enough to gather clues but needing Victorique's brilliance to assemble them into a solution.

Kazuya’s primary motivation stems from a desire to prove his own worth outside of his competitive family environment. Initially, his goal is simply to complete his studies, but upon meeting Victorique de Blois, his purpose shifts toward protecting her. In a story filled with political conspiracies and tragic mysteries, Kazuya represents a pure, stabilizing force. He is often called the "Black Reaper" or "The Reaper Who Comes in Spring" due to his black hair and eyes coinciding with a local superstition, which causes his classmates to shun him. This isolation ends when he wanders into the academy’s botanical garden atop the library, where he meets Victorique, a reclusive genius girl. He becomes her "assistant" or "servant," fetching items and accompanying her to crime scenes, effectively serving as the legs that allow the imprisoned Victorique to interact with the outside world.

Within the narrative, Kazuya serves as the emotional core and the knight to Victorique’s lady. He frequently finds himself at crime scenes, a tendency that police inspector Grevil de Blois finds absurdly remarkable. His role is to gather the "fragments of chaos"—witness accounts, physical clues, and circumstantial evidence—which he then provides to Victorique so she can use her "Wellspring of Wisdom" to solve the mystery. He also acts as a bridge between Victorique and the rest of the world, helping her navigate social situations and slowly thawing her cold demeanor through his unwavering kindness. He is often accused of crimes or taken hostage due to his proximity to danger, forcing Victorique to solve cases to save him.

Key relationships define his journey. His relationship with Victorique de Blois is the central axis of the story. Initially viewing her as a demanding and arrogant doll-like girl, he grows to deeply care for her, becoming the first person to treat her with genuine kindness rather than fear or contempt. He endures her verbal abuse and bossy nature because he understands her loneliness, and in turn, she becomes emotionally dependent on him, fearing his absence. He also has a friendly rivalry of sorts with Grevil de Blois, a detective who relies on Victorique’s intellect but clashes with Kazuya’s straightforward nature. Later, he befriends Avril Bradley, a transfer student who develops a crush on him, though Kazuya remains oblivious to her romantic interest due to his focus on Victorique.

Kazuya undergoes significant development, evolving from a boy seeking purpose to a man hardened by tragedy. At the start, he is a somewhat naive and academically focused student. Through his adventures, he gains courage and resilience, physically fighting against murderers and armed criminals to protect Victorique. As World War II looms, he is forced to return to Japan and enlists in the Imperial Army, experiencing the brutality of war. This period changes him; he endures harsh training and combat, resulting in a shaved head and a hardened exterior. After four years of separation, he reunites with Victorique, his leg wounded from battle. Ultimately, rejecting his militaristic family background and the chaos of Europe, he immigrates with Victorique to the United States, where they marry and run a detective agency, with Kazuya eventually working as a translator and reporter. While he lacks supernatural abilities or genius-level deduction, his notable abilities include remarkable stamina (often climbing the library tower), proficiency in self-defense taught by his military family, and an incredible knack for being present at the scene of a mystery.
