Description
Alphonse Elric, often called Al, is the younger brother of Edward Elric and a central figure in the film Fullmetal Alchemist: The Sacred Star of Milos. His appearance is that of a large, imposing, and hollow suit of armor, which stands over six feet tall. This is the result of a past forbidden alchemical experiment to bring his deceased mother back to life, a process that cost him his entire physical body. To save his soul, his brother Edward sacrificed his own right arm to bind Alphonse’s spirit to the suit of armor through a blood seal on its interior. Because of this, Alphonse cannot feel physical sensations such as touch or taste, nor can he sleep.

In terms of personality, Alphonse stands in contrast to his often hot-headed and impulsive older brother. He is generally gentle, kind, polite, and serves as a voice of reason and the peacemaker during their adventures. Despite his kind nature, he possesses a hidden stubbornness and can become formidable when truly angered. He is known for his compassion, especially towards strays and those in need, and has a particular fondness for cats. Although he is the younger sibling, he often displays a maturity that helps keep Edward grounded, acting as an anchor for his brother’s more reckless tendencies. His deep, clanking footsteps and hollow body can sometimes startle others, and people who meet him for the first time often mistakenly assume he is the "Fullmetal Alchemist" due to his armored form, a misconception that greatly annoys his brother.

Alphonse’s primary motivation, which he shares with Edward, is to find a way to restore his original human body. This quest drives him to join his brother in searching for the Philosopher's Stone, a legendary alchemical artifact. In The Sacred Star of Milos, his immediate role is to accompany Edward in pursuing a criminal named Melvin Voyager, which leads them to the troubled border city of Table City and the nearby Valley of Milos. Throughout the film’s events, he demonstrates his protective nature and unwavering loyalty to his brother and new allies.

The most significant relationship in Alphonse's life is with his older brother, Edward. They share an incredibly strong bond, having endured a profound tragedy together and dedicated their lives to restoring each other's bodies. Al is fiercely protective of Edward and often prevents his brother from going too far in his self-sacrificing quest to help him. Edward feels a tremendous guilt over Al’s condition, but Al refuses to be the sole beneficiary of their journey, insisting that any solution must restore Edward’s limbs as well. Within The Sacred Star of Milos, Alphonse develops a key relationship with Julia Crichton, a young alchemist from the Milosian resistance. After falling into the Valley with her, the two form a friendship as she learns about his and Edward’s past. He also maintains a connection to his childhood friend Winry Rockbell, who is like a sister to him, and he takes pleasure in teasing her about her apparent feelings for Edward.

In terms of development, Alphonse's character remains consistent in his core traits of compassion and loyalty. The events of The Sacred Star of Milos place him in a situation where his unique nature as a soul bonded to armor allows him to act as a direct protector. For instance, he uses his hollow body to help save the people of the Valley from a flow of lava. The film emphasizes his role as a supportive and courageous figure, reinforcing his commitment to helping others even as he continues his personal quest for restoration. At the film’s conclusion, he promises Julia that he and his brother will visit her again after they have successfully reclaimed their original bodies.

Alphonse is a powerful and capable fighter. Despite his young age, he is a skilled alchemist, able to perform transmutations, though he initially requires a transmutation circle. He is also exceptionally proficient in hand-to-hand combat, having been trained alongside Edward by their master Izumi Curtis. It is noted that he has never lost to his brother in a sparring match. His body of armor makes him nearly invulnerable to most conventional physical attacks, such as bullets, and he is incredibly strong. However, his existence is fragile; if the blood seal that binds his soul to the armor is damaged or erased, he will cease to exist.
