Description
Noah van Helsing is a seasoned vampire hunter and a supporting figure in the anime adaptation of Blade. He comes from a long lineage of hunters connected to the Van Helsing name, and he carries the weight of that legacy with a pragmatic, world-weary demeanor. In the anime, Noah is first shown encountering Blade in the past when he helps Blade save a young girl from a vampire attack. After witnessing that Blade is unharmed by sunlight, Noah realizes that Blade is a daywalker—a hybrid with both human and vampire traits. Recognizing Blade’s potential as a weapon against vampires, Noah tests a prototype retro virus on him, a serum made from vampire ashes that normally destroys vampires but, because of Blade’s unique DNA, instead cures him of his blood cravings. Following the successful experiment, Blade asks Noah to train him in the art of vampire hunting.

Noah’s personality is gruff, practical, and often tired, but he remains deeply committed to his mission. He is a scientist and tactician as much as a field hunter, and he uses his genius‑level intellect to develop tools and strategies against the undead. Despite his age and growing weariness—he admits at one point that he is getting too old for vampire hunting—he never hesitates to put himself in danger when the situation demands it. He is protective of his young companion Makoto, whom he initially passes off as a boy, and he shows a softer side through his loyalty to his dog, Razor, who accompanies him on many missions.

Noah’s role in the story is that of a mentor, supplier, and occasional rescuer for Blade. He provides critical intelligence, such as the location of Deacon Frost’s hideout in the Philippines, and he supplies Blade with medicine to manage his condition. He is captured by the vampire Matthes but later freed by Makoto and Razor. In the later episodes, Noah travels to Cambodia to rescue Blade from the Existence facility and then joins the assault on the hidden vampire city of Armarot. During the final battle, he surveys the battlefield, detonates the enemy’s arsenal, and fights alongside Razor toward the blood source. He ultimately destroys Armarot’s blood supply by dropping purified water into it, contributing directly to Frost’s defeat.

Noah’s key relationships include his profound bond with Blade, whom he trained and treats almost like a son; his friendship with the swordmaster Tanba Yagyu, who trained both Blade and the mutant Kikyo Mikage; and his mentorship of Makoto, a young orphan who becomes a capable ally. He also shares a close partnership with his dog Razor, who saves his life on multiple occasions.

Development‑wise, Noah starts as a confident, if weary, hunter who believes in the possibility of redemption for Blade. Over the course of the series, he becomes more reflective about his own mortality and the toll the endless war takes on him. After the fall of Armarot and the death of Deacon Frost, he expresses belief in Blade’s resilience and accepts that the fight against vampires will continue.

In terms of notable abilities, Noah possesses a genius‑level intellect with extensive knowledge of vampire biology, weaknesses, and behavior. He is skilled in creating anti‑vampire serums and weapons, but he is also a capable hand‑to‑hand combatant, able to knock down opponents and fight through enemy swarms. He has a high tolerance for personal risk, often willingly putting himself in harm’s way to gather information or sabotage enemy operations. His most distinctive personal asset is his unyielding resolve, even in the face of overwhelming odds.
