Description
Hinata Shintani is a transfer student who arrives at Seika High School during the second year of the main story. He is a childhood friend of the protagonist, Misaki Ayuzawa, having attended elementary school with her before moving away. After the death of his parents, Hinata was sent to live with his grandparents in the countryside, which is the source of his distinctive rural dialect. His decision to return to the city and transfer to Seika High is driven by a single, powerful motivation: to find and reunite with his first love, whom he remembers as Misa-chan.

Physically, Hinata is a tall and slim young man, standing 177 cm tall and weighing 58 kg. This is a dramatic change from his childhood, when he was notably overweight. He has short brown hair and wide brown eyes, often giving him an innocent and youthful expression. Minako Ayuzawa, Misaki's mother, remarks that he physically resembles Misaki's father, Sakuya.

Hinata's personality is defined by its purity, honesty, and cheerful energy. He is portrayed as innocent, naive, and straightforward, often acting in a childish manner that contrasts with the more serious demeanor of other characters. Despite his simple and carefree nature, he possesses a friendly and sociable disposition, allowing him to make friends easily at his new school. His sunny optimism is one of his most prominent traits, and he faces even difficult emotional situations with a surprising degree of selflessness. For instance, even after learning that Misaki is already in a close relationship with Takumi Usui, Hinata does not become bitter or jealous in a malicious way. Instead, he openly declares that he will not give up on his feelings, a determination he had resolved on even before transferring.

A defining characteristic of Hinata is his enormous appetite. His love for food is nearly as strong as his love for Misaki. He can eat almost anything at any time, a tendency that often leads him into trouble at school. This gluttony is paired with a remarkable, almost supernatural ability to smell food. He can identify specific items, such as a honey lemon candy, even from a distance or through its packaging. This talent amuses the other male students, who quickly befriend him by offering food challenges. His past as an overweight child changed when he moved to the countryside, where a diet consisting mostly of vegetables helped him lose weight, though his voracious hunger remained.

In the narrative, Hinata serves as a primary rival to Takumi Usui for Misaki's affection. His arrival creates a love triangle that introduces new emotional stakes. He is openly adoring of Misaki, frequently calling her Misaki-chan and seeking her attention, actions that visibly unsettle the typically composed Usui. Despite this rivalry, Hinata is not antagonistic toward Usui. On the contrary, he admires Usui's strength, talent, and cool demeanor, recognizing the qualities that make him a formidable competitor. For his part, Hinata works part-time at a gas station to support himself financially while attending school.

Hinata shares several key relationships that define his role in the story. His connection with Misaki is the most significant, rooted in a childhood memory where she saved him after he fell from a tree. To prove the depth and longevity of his feelings, he has kept the wrapper from a candy she gave him all those years ago. Upon their reunion, he does not recognize her immediately due to her own changes, but when she calls him by his old nickname, You-kun, he joyfully embraces her, confirming her identity. This unwavering devotion remains a constant, even as he comes to accept that Misaki's heart belongs to another. His relationship with the other male students is also notable; where Misaki is feared as the strict, boy-hating student council president, Hinata's easygoing nature and humorous antics make him a beloved figure among them. Later in the manga series, Hinata's character development leads him to a new, happy relationship. He eventually starts dating Suzuna Ayuzawa, Misaki's younger sister, and by the time of the series' epilogue, which takes place ten years later, he is married to her.

Aside from his enhanced sense of smell and athletic ability, Hinata's most notable ability is his emotional resilience. His capacity to love so openly and honestly, and to remain kind and cheerful in the face of unrequited love, is his greatest strength.
