Description
Kyōta Tsubaki is a central male character in the story. He is a high school student who stands out as both the most popular boy in school and the top academic performer, often ranking first despite frequently sleeping in class. His outward appearance is flashy and he initially has a reputation as a playboy who treats romantic relationships as games or bets.
His family background is marked by abandonment: his mother left the household when he was six years old, and his father is a middle school teacher. These early experiences, combined with a betrayal by a nurse he once trusted, instilled in him a deep fear of commitment and a cynical view of women. He initially approaches the protagonist, Tsubaki Hibino, as a target for amusement after she defiantly cuts his long hair on their first day of high school. He demands that she compensate him with her “first experiences,” a declaration that sets the tone for their early interactions.
Despite his cold and teasing exterior, Kyōta is highly intelligent and possesses a natural leadership quality that makes him the center of his class. He has a genuine, hidden passion for studying the universe and dreams of working in aerospace engineering. His role in the story evolves from antagonist to love interest; as he spends more time with Tsubaki, he is gradually drawn to her honest and straightforward nature, which is unlike the girls he has manipulated before. He falls in love with her but struggles to let himself commit fully due to his fear of being hurt.
His development is marked by a gradual opening of his heart. He experiences jealousy, protectiveness, and vulnerability, eventually breaking up with Tsubaki briefly in an effort to shield her from his own insecurities and from dangers he perceives, only to reconcile with her later. His relationship with Tsubaki is the central driving force of his character arc: she helps him confront his past and learn to trust again. He also maintains a close friendship with his childhood friend Nishiki, who knows his history and provides support.
Notable abilities include his academic excellence, particularly in science, his persuasive and commanding presence among peers, and a consistent ability to perform well without visible effort. He also shows a hidden talent for understanding and supporting others once he drops his defensive facade. Over the course of the story, he transforms from a detached playboy into a devoted and caring partner, ultimately pursuing his dream of studying the universe while maintaining a long-distance relationship with Tsubaki.
