Description
Midori Kitakami is a character introduced in the Rebuild of Evangelion film series, first appearing in Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo. She serves as a crew member of the AAA Wunder, the flying battleship operated by the paramilitary organization Wille. Her primary duties involve operating sonar and radar systems on the bridge. Physically, she is a pale young woman with pink hair and thick lips. Her character design is noted to pay homage to Gay Ellis from the science‑fiction series UFO, and her name is derived from the torpedo cruiser Kitakami.

Kitakami’s personality is marked by a casual, somewhat lazy demeanor; her control panel is often covered with sticky notes left by someone else, indicating a lack of discipline or disorganization. She also displays a pronounced fear of mortality, and her emotional responses are strong and openly expressed. She is particularly hostile toward Shinji Ikari, whom she blames for triggering the Near Third Impact that devastated the world and caused the loss of her family. This hostility surfaces frequently in her interactions with him, including audible sighs of disgust, sharp remarks, and even an attempt to shoot him in Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time.

Her motivations are rooted in trauma. An original video animation titled Evangelion: 3.0 (-46h) expands on her backstory: during the Third Impact, her family turned red and vanished before her eyes. She wandered aimlessly through the disaster zone, barely surviving, until she was rescued by Asuka Langley Shikinami and Mari Illustrious Makinami. This experience instilled a deep‑seated desire for revenge, leading her to join Wille with the explicit goal of confronting Shinji. Despite her animosity, she remains a loyal operator within the bridge crew under Captain Misato Katsuragi, though she often questions decisions that favor Shinji.

Over the course of the story, Kitakami shows little development in her attitude toward Shinji; she remains embittered and unforgiving even in the final film. Her notable traits include her distinct pink hair—which turned that color after being exposed to LCL during the rescue—and her use of colloquial, youthful language that contrasts with the more experienced Wille personnel. She does not possess any special combat or piloting abilities, functioning solely as a radar and sonar operator. Her role serves to illustrate the lasting personal resentment and grief carried by ordinary survivors of the Third Impact.
