Description
Kuhn is a Steam Gunner within the fictional MMORPG The World R:2 and plays a significant supporting role in the narrative. He is an Epitaph User bearing the title The Propagation, which allows him to summon and control the Avatar known as Magus. Outside the game, his real identity is Tomonari Kasumi, a twenty-four-year-old man who works part-time at an arcade in Kanazawa and also holds a part-time position at CC Corp, the company that administers The World. His history with the online game is extensive and deeply personal; he is a former coma victim from incidents in the previous version of The World, where he was known by the character name Sieg, and he is the ex-boyfriend of Mai Minase. This background informs his awareness of the serious real-world dangers posed by anomalies like AIDA.

Kuhn presents a cheerful, optimistic, and highly social demeanor, frequently acting as a light-hearted and flirtatious womanizer who claims to possess the private contact details of hundreds of female players. This playful surface, however, conceals a more complex personality. He has a strong sense of justice and genuinely cares for the safety of others, often expressing a dislike for putting his friends in danger. His flirtatious behavior online masks a real-life difficulty in forming lasting romantic relationships; he has privately confessed that his only serious romantic relationship occurred during his high school years. As an experienced player, he projects confidence and serves as a reliable, older-brother figure to less seasoned allies.

His primary motivation is to maintain peace within the game world and protect its players from harm. As a member of the guild Raven and the organization G.U., he is officially tasked with investigating and eliminating AIDA, the mysterious computer phenomenon responsible for putting players into real-world comas. He is driven by a personal understanding of this threat and works diligently on the project, taking the situation seriously despite his casual attitude. A secondary, lighter motivation is his ongoing, futile quest to collect contact information from female players, specifically targeting his colleague Pi’s as a particular milestone.

Within the story, Kuhn serves as a key operative for G.U. and acts as a crucial bridge between the organization and the protagonist, Haseo. He is often the one who officially recruits the initially hostile Haseo into their ranks, recognizing his power and drawing parallels between them. His role is that of a steady, supportive field agent who becomes a more active leader as the crisis escalates across the events depicted. He is directly involved in combating AIDA threats and guiding the team through various operations. His development involves learning to balance his inherently carefree nature with the grave responsibility of being an Epitaph User, transitioning from a capable support player into a more grounded and reliable leader who no longer hides entirely behind his comedic facade.

His key relationships center on the G.U. team. He acts as an early mentor and older-brother figure to Haseo, patiently dealing with his aggression and helping him understand his role as an Epitaph User. He holds deep respect for Haseo’s strength. With his fellow G.U. operative Pi, he shares a professional working relationship that is often strained by his persistent and unsuccessful flirtatious advances. He is admired and looked up to by his former guildmates from Canard, Silabus and Gaspard, for whom he remains a respected figure even after moving on to other duties. His bond with his Avatar is notably close; having been the second player to activate an Avatar, he has achieved near-complete control over Magus, which he affectionately refers to as My Magus.

His notable abilities stem from his mastery over the Avatar Magus, which enables him to engage in the series' large-scale Avatar battles and utilize the power of Data Drain on infected entities. As a Steam Gunner class, he is a formidable combatant who wields a steam-powered firearm, providing powerful ranged support in battle. His extensive experience from playing as Sieg in the original version of The World and his veteran status in The World R:2 make him a battle-hardened and strategic ally, capable of holding his own against powerful threats derived from AIDA.
