Description
Markus, alternately known as Marcus, is a player within the virtual reality MMORPG NewWorld Online and a member of the Kingdom of the Flame Emperor guild, achieving eighth place in the game's first major event. Physically, he appears thin with distinctive gray hair and black eyes, his bangs frequently obscuring his right eye. He typically dons a black and white robe and stands 1.57 meters tall.
Markus possesses a naturally defeatist demeanor, easily becoming discouraged when his plans fail. Yet, bolstered by consistent emotional support from his guildmates, he persists in combat rather than fully yielding. This resilience surfaces most clearly during critical moments, like guild defenses where his preparations are compromised.
In the Guild Competition Arc, Markus and Misery defended their guild base against intruders. A hooded figure repeatedly triggered his traps, causing him significant frustration. When Maple attacked with the twins, Markus's delay and binding traps proved largely ineffective against her high defense and poison immunity. Despite tactical adjustments to counter her abilities, Maple and her allies overwhelmed his defenses. The mere anticipation of Maple's arrival during the siege further demoralized him, though Mii's intervention offered brief respite before their eventual defeat. Post-event, Maple added Markus to her friends list, and he attended the Maple Tree guild's celebration.
During the Rulership Arc, Markus explored a jungle event, teaming up with Kanade upon discovering shared objectives. Their collaboration proved highly effective: Markus deployed traps while Kanade provided support, easily defeating ensnared enemies. They later joined Chrome, Misery, and Payne to form a five-member group, scaled a massive tree, reached the boss area after Maple and Payne logged off, explored ruins, solved a shifting room puzzle, and defeated a skeleton king boss.
In the Companions Arc, Markus encountered Maple training her pet, Syrup. Observing Syrup's changes, Markus, Misery, and Shin revealed their own companions. Markus showcased Clear, his color-changing chameleon pet.
For the Eighth Event Arc, Markus partnered with Iz on the second day. Together they conquered a dungeon, aiding in regrouping allies. Later, he joined Dred, Mai, and Yui to tackle another dungeon. Utilizing Shadow's abilities to bypass monsters, the group defeated a large Electric Catfish boss. On the third day, Markus participated in a coordinated three-guild effort to defeat the powerful entity Cthulhu.
Markus specializes in trap-based combat, employing offensive and control-oriented spells. His skills include Remote Location, allowing him to set traps based on specific spells like Rock Wall and Wind Blade. He also uses Secret Flower, concealing his party within a vine barrier topped by a white flower, rendering them undetectable to monsters for 30 seconds; activation requires the party to be out of sight and incurs significant resource costs. Holy Chains summons yellow magic circles around a target to bind them with glowing white chains, immobilizing and sealing their skills for 3 seconds. While valuable in events and dungeons, his trap expertise diminishes against opponents like Maple with unconventional defenses. He has also been seen using projectile weapons such as kunai.
Markus maintains close bonds within his guild, particularly with Misery, who provides strategic and emotional support in battle. He fosters friendships outside his guild, notably with Chrome, Kanade, and Drag, collaborating in combat and exchanging private information. His pet chameleon, Clear, accompanies him on explorations. The origin of his player name references the phrase "X marks the spot," reflecting his strategic role in placing traps throughout the game world.
