Description
Noi is a major character in the anime Blue Dragon: Trials of the Seven Shadows and serves as the deuteragonist of the series. Introduced as a mysterious young child, Noi is first seen being pursued by the red dragon Mikhael. He is eventually revealed to be one of the Investiture Beings, a group of dragon-like entities with immense power, but unlike most of his kind he chooses to abandon his fellow beings and assist humanity by joining Shu and his companions.
Noi has a quiet and initially aloof personality. He appears arrogant when he first meets Shu, bluntly telling him that he will soon be killed, and he refuses to reveal any information about himself even after escaping danger. Over time, however, he becomes a loyal friend and ally to Shu, Bouquet, and the others. His motivations center on helping Shu achieve his goal of defending Earth from destruction, and he commits himself to the human cause despite his origins as an Investiture Being.
Noi plays a pivotal role in the story by using his unique power to reawaken the shadows of Shu, Bouquet, and Marumaro after they are taken away or suppressed. This ability is crucial to the group’s continued fight against the threats they face. He also frequently merges his own power with Shu’s Blue Dragon, creating an armored form of Blue Dragon that gains a forcefield ability. Noi’s presence drives much of the plot, as his mysterious nature and connection to the Investiture Beings lead the group into the trials set by the seven dragons.
Noi’s key relationships include his bond with Shu and Bouquet, who accept him despite learning he is an Investiture Being. He develops a playful rivalry with Marumaro when they first meet, but the two eventually work together. He also has a connection to Lota and Hildegard, two other Investiture Beings, and after the final confrontation with Rudolph, Noi departs with them.
Throughout the series, Noi undergoes significant development. He starts as a secretive and somewhat distant figure, but gradually opens up to his human friends and proves his dedication in battle. His dragon form initially appears as a small black dragon, but during the climactic fight against Rudolph in his flying castle, Noi unleashes his full power and matures into a larger, more formidable black dragon capable of fighting on even terms with one of the Seven Shadows.
Noi’s notable abilities include his power to restore lost shadows to their owners, a technique he uses early on with Shu’s Blue Dragon. He can transform into a black dragon, though unlike other Investiture Beings, he cannot summon his dragon form from a separate shadow. He employs special techniques such as Tosen Kyuden to revive shadows and Tousen Bardagir to allow Bouquet and her shadow Hippopotamus to merge with Shu for a combined armored form. In his matured dragon form, Noi gains enhanced strength and durability, enabling him to hold his own against powerful enemies. He also possesses the ability to merge with Blue Dragon to create a reinforced version with a protective forcefield.
