Description
Andropov is a character who appears exclusively in the Blue Dragon anime, playing a significant role across both the first season and its sequel, Blue Dragon: Trials of the Seven Shadows (also known as Tenkai no Shichi Ryuu). He is introduced as a member of General Logi's Independent Flying Squadron, serving as the group's youngest and most intelligent operative. His primary function within this military unit is reconnaissance, a task for which he is exceptionally well-suited.

In terms of background, Andropov begins the series as a direct subordinate to General Logi. His allegiance is to the Gran Kingdom initially, but he follows Logi when the general secedes to form his own faction, which eventually becomes the kingdom of Rosekstan. His early role in the story is that of an antagonist, frequently coming into conflict with the protagonist Shu and his friends. He is a capable pilot and a skilled tactician, often using his shadow to survey battlefields and track enemy movements. A notable early mission involves him successfully capturing Kluke, one of Shu's companions, for interrogation by General Logi.

Andropov's personality is defined by a combination of youthful brilliance and a serious, duty-focused demeanor typical of a soldier. He is highly intelligent and takes his reconnaissance duties seriously. However, his character is significantly shaped by a hidden, unspoken affection for Kluke, which develops after he captures her. This crush creates an internal conflict for him, as he is torn between his loyalty to General Logi and his growing feelings for someone who is technically an enemy. He never openly admits his feelings, but his actions, such as secretly providing Kluke with the key to remove her handcuffs and allow her to escape captivity, reveal a compassionate and conflicted side beneath his soldier's exterior. In the second season, after being injured and living under Kluke's care, he is initially reluctant to return to fighting, telling Shu that Kluke no longer wishes to be involved in the conflict, which shows a protective and changed perspective.

His motivations evolve considerably over the course of the narrative. In the first season, he is driven by his duty to General Logi and the objectives of the Independent Flying Squadron. He is a loyal soldier who follows orders, including engaging in battles against Shu's group and attacking Gran Kingdom fleets after Logi's secession. However, the death of his comrade Schneider, who sacrificed himself to protect Andropov during a fight against powerful shadow monsters, is a pivotal moment that deeply affects him. Andropov is left unconscious and seriously injured, and this traumatic event contributes to his subsequent change in allegiance. By the time of Trials of the Seven Shadows, his motivations have shifted from serving a military leader to a more personal goal: protecting Kluke and atoning for his past actions, leading him to formally join Shu's group in their fight against the White Brigade and the celestial dragons.

Andropov's key relationships are central to his development. His relationship with his superior, General Logi, is one of initial loyalty, but Logi's betrayal or changing circumstances serve as a catalyst for Andropov's own defection from his original side. His bond with Kluke is the most significant, beginning with her capture and his subsequent crush, evolving into a deep and protective connection. By the second season, he is shown recuperating in her care, and he immediately defends her when danger arrives in their village, even when he is physically at his limit. His former comrade, Schneider, is another crucial relationship. Their partnership in battle and Schneider's ultimate sacrifice leave a lasting impact on Andropov, likely influencing his later decisions and his value for the lives of his allies.

Throughout his character arc, Andropov undergoes a clear transformation from a loyal antagonist to a valuable ally. He begins as a competent but hostile member of an opposing military force. Following his injury and recovery, he emerges as a changed person, having rejected his former allegiances and chosen to fight alongside those he once opposed. This development is physical as well as moral; in the second season, he is often seen using a cane to support himself, a visual reminder of the severe injuries he sustained in the first season's final battle. His role in the story shifts from being an obstacle for the heroes to a supporting member of their team, using his tactical knowledge to assist in key battles, such as against the celestial dragon Rudolph.

Andropov possesses several notable abilities, most of which stem from his shadow, Alubujem (also known as Alfheim). Alubujem is a four-armed crystalline creature that is instrumental to Andropov's reconnaissance role. Its primary ability is to launch crystals that allow Andropov to track people and survey large areas, making him an excellent scout and tracker. In combat, Alubujem is a formidable fighter capable of launching an endless stream of crystal shards as projectiles. Even if the creature is shattered, its pieces can be manipulated by Andropov and it possesses the ability to reassemble itself, demonstrating a unique regenerative property. This combination of reconnaissance and combat capabilities makes Andropov a versatile and effective shadow wielder, whether operating as a solo agent or part of a larger team.
