Description
Hiling Care is a fictional character from the second season of the anime Mobile Suit Gundam 00. She is an Innovade, an artificial being designed to mimic the appearance and abilities of an Innovator, a higher stage of human evolution. Hiling was created with the same DNA base sequence as the main antagonist, Ribbons Almark, making her his genetic counterpart. As a combat-type Innovade, she was specifically designed for piloting mobile suits, and her designated model number is 0026. While created as a neutral sex, she assumes a female gender in her interactions with others, characterized by her light green curly hair and purple irises that can shift to a golden disc-like pattern when utilizing her full abilities.
In terms of personality, Hiling is notably straightforward, brash, and impatient, often displaying the immaturity and overconfidence of a teenager. She is arguably the most sarcastic and cynical member of the Innovators, holding a deep-seated pride in her existence as an Innovator. This pride was largely instilled by Ribbons' influence and leads her to harbor a general disdain for ordinary humans. She frequently mocks human emotions and relationships, viewing them as inferior and irrational. Her contempt is best illustrated by her mockery of Andrei Smirnov and Louise Halevy, whom she cruelly labels as a perfect pair of "monsters" due to their respective issues of patricide and revenge.
Despite her abrasive exterior, Hiling is fanatically loyal to Ribbons Almark and seeks his approval, often appearing jealous of anyone else who captures his attention. She is quick to belittle others but can also be sensitive to criticism or failure herself, even if she rarely learns from her tactical mistakes. While she initially appears unaffected by the deaths of her fellow Innovators like Bring Stabity, she holds a grudge against Celestial Being for their destruction and grows increasingly concerned about the enemy's capabilities as the conflict progresses, even as she maintains her belief in Innovator superiority.
Hiling's primary motivation is to serve Ribbons' plan for world unification under the Earth Sphere Federation and its military arm, the A-LAWS. She acts as a "Licensor" for the A-LAWS, a special operative permitted to act on her own judgment. Her role in the story is that of an antagonist and mobile suit ace, frequently engaging the protagonists of Celestial Being in combat. She is often deployed alongside her fellow Innovator, Revive Revival, with whom she shares a working relationship that is nonetheless marked by her casual and often irritating remarks. Her initial encounter with the Celestial Being Gundam Meisters occurs when she disarms Tieria Erde during a failed assassination attempt on Ribbons.
Throughout the second season, Hiling pilots several advanced mobile suits. She starts with the long-range artillery-type GNZ-003 Gadessa, where she proves her skills by destroying numerous enemy ships during the battle to defend the satellite weapon Memento Mori. However, after suffering defeats against Setsuna F. Seiei in the 00 Gundam, she switches to the close-combat GNZ-005 Garazzo, a unit equipped with powerful GN Beam Claws, as she preferred the thrill of melee combat. Her character shows limited development, remaining a zealous follower of Ribbons. Her overconfidence and lack of tactical patience frequently lead to her defeat, and she never truly overhauls her approach to battle.
Hiling's notable abilities stem from her nature as an Innovade. She possesses B-level quantum brainwaves, granting her telepathic communication with other Innovades, enhanced spatial awareness, and the ability to survive in the vacuum of space. Her artificial body also grants her enhanced reflexes and nanomachines that prevent aging. As a pilot, she is aggressive and skilled, capable of holding her own against Gundams, though she is ultimately outclassed by the evolving abilities of pilots like Setsuna and the superior performance of the 00 Raiser. In the final battle, her Garazzo is torn apart by Allelujah Haptism in the Gundam Arios, leading to her death as she desperately calls out for Ribbons.
