Makima debuted as a high-ranking Public Safety Devil Hunter commanding Special Division 4. She first encountered protagonist Denji after his defeat of the Zombie Devil, detecting his anomalous scent and presenting a stark choice: death or becoming her "pet" in exchange for basic sustenance and shelter. Denji accepted these terms, establishing their core dynamic. She subsequently placed him within a fabricated family unit alongside fiends Power and Aki Hayakawa, while posing as a human bound by a devil contract.
Her true nature was the Control Devil, an entity manifesting humanity's fear of domination. Originating in Hell alongside her sisters (later identified as fellow Horsemen of the Apocalypse), she fought against the Chainsaw Devil before his vanishing to Earth. Arriving on Earth herself, she adopted the alias "Makima" and ascended through Japan's government-backed devil-hunting hierarchy. A contract with the Prime Minister of Japan diverted any fatal injuries inflicted upon her onto random citizens, creating apparent immortality through distributed damage.
Core abilities inherent to her being granted absolute control over those she perceived as inferior. This enabled remote surveillance via animal manipulation, personality alteration of hybrids like Quanxi and Reze, and the summoning of deceased individuals to exploit their contracts. Offensive capabilities involved force manipulation for internal crushing, often activated through rituals requiring a sacrifice speaking the target's name. She also possessed enhanced physical strength and sensory perception, primarily identifying individuals by scent rather than visual recognition.
Her central objective fixated on the Chainsaw Devil, Pochita. Her goal was to break Denji's contract by orchestrating his psychological collapse, systematically granting then annihilating sources of his happiness—including manipulating events that led to Aki's transformation into the Gun Fiend and Power's death. This plan aimed to either subjugate Pochita as a partner in reshaping the world by erasing "undesirable" concepts (death, fear, specific media) or achieve transcendence through consumption by him. These motivations stemmed from an inability to form equal relationships and a deep desire for familial connection with the revered Pochita.
Key operational maneuvers included coordinating the capture of Gun Devil fragments, deploying Denji against international assassins like Santa Claus, and confronting the Darkness Devil in Hell via the Spider Devil's spatial manipulation. During the Gun Devil's attack, she weaponized controlled hybrids and deceased hunters against the American-contracted entity. Her tactics encompassed psychological warfare, such as coercing yakuza through mutilation of their relatives and erasing the Angel Devil's memories to ensure loyalty.
The conflict culminated when Denji, recognizing her contract's vulnerability to lethal intent framed as "love" rather than hostility, killed her in their final confrontation. This act triggered her reincarnation in China as Nayuta, a child embodiment of the Control Devil devoid of prior memories. Nayuta was later entrusted to Denji's care to foster healthier relational development.
Makima also appeared in the *Goddess of Victory: Nikke* crossover event, interacting with Ark officials as a diplomatic representative of the Devil Hunters, displaying curiosity about the new environment while maintaining her characteristically detached demeanor.
