TV-Series
Description
Anew Returner is a fictional character introduced in the second season of Mobile Suit Gundam 00. She is a woman with light purple hair and reddish chestnut eyes, standing 170 centimeters tall. Her name symbolically reflects her narrative arc, as Anew suggests a new beginning and Returner implies a return to one's origins or true self.

Anew is a member of the Innovators, a group of artificial humanoids known as Innovades created to guide the world towards a new era. Unlike many of her kind who are gender-neutral, she was specifically created with a female gender to serve as an undercover spy within the organization Celestial Being. Her genetic code is identical to that of her fellow Innovator, Revive Revival, essentially making them twins.

Her background is one of manufactured purpose. She was created and programmed by the Innovator leader Ribbons Almark, using the supercomputer Veda to implant her with knowledge and memories. Her mission was to infiltrate Celestial Being, and she was placed with the organization by the broker Wang Liu Mei. Initially, she worked at a Celestial Being research base, but was later transferred to the crew of their mother ship, the Ptolemaios 2, where she served as a helmsman and engineer.

In terms of personality, Anew exhibits two distinct states. In her default state, with her Innovator programming dormant, she is a kind, gentle, and soft-spoken individual. She is caring towards her comrades, highly capable, and committed to the goals of Celestial Being. In this state, she is not consciously aware of her true identity as a spy. When contacted via quantum brainwaves by Revive Revival, her Innovator personality awakens. In this state, she retains all her memories and experiences from her time with Celestial Being but acts without conscience, fully dedicated to the Innovators' cause and willing to perform any act of subterfuge or violence.

Her primary motivation shifts dramatically over the course of the story. As a spy, her programmed purpose is to gather intelligence and act as a beacon for the Innovators to locate Celestial Being. However, her time aboard the Ptolemaios 2 leads her to develop genuine feelings for the Gundam Meister Lyle Dylandy, who bears the codename Lockon Stratos. Her motivation becomes torn between her manufactured loyalty to Ribbons and the authentic love she grows to feel for Lyle. This internal conflict is the central driver of her role in the narrative.

Her role in the story is that of a tragic figure. She is the means by which the Innovators consistently track and attack Celestial Being, creating constant tension and peril for the protagonists. Her relationship with Lyle develops from professional respect to a secret romantic affair, representing a chance for her to become something more than her programming. Her true nature is eventually exposed when Revive Revival is captured, forcing her to betray the crew, take hostages, and escape. This leads to the climax where she pilots a mobile suit, the GNZ-007 Gaddess, against Lyle. During their battle, she begins to reject her identity as an Innovator, choosing Lyle and a human life. In response, Ribbons takes direct control of her mind, forcing her to continue the attack. She is ultimately shot down by the 00 Raiser, but in her dying moments, the GN particles from the 00 Raiser allow her and Lyle to share their true feelings for one another through a quantum brainwave link, giving them a moment of complete understanding before she dies.

Key relationships define her journey. Her relationship with Lyle Dylandy is the most significant; he is the first person who sees her not as a tool or a spy, and she falls in love with him, which becomes the catalyst for her desire to defy her creators. Her relationship with Revive Revival is that of a genetic twin, and he is the one who activates her sleeper personality. Her relationship with Ribbons Almark is one of creator and creation, and he ultimately overrides her free will, leading to her death.

Throughout the series, Anew demonstrates several notable abilities. She possesses B-level quantum brainwaves, which grant her telepathic abilities and allow her to be contacted remotely by other Innovators. She is a polymath with expertise in multiple fields, including regenerative medicine, astrophysics, and mobile suit engineering. She is a competent mobile suit pilot and is also skilled in cooking and ship handling. Furthermore, as an Innovator, her body contains nanomachines that enhance her physical capabilities and link her consciousness to Veda.
