Description
Kaneru Nidō is a young woman in her twenties who works as an office assistant while pursuing the creation of dojinshi, or self-published manga, as a serious hobby on the side. Her ultimate dream is to become a professional manga artist, a goal she pursues with great determination.
In terms of personality, Kaneru is defined by her immense enthusiasm, which often compensates for her noticeable lack of natural artistic talent. Despite being older than many of her peers—around twenty-four years old—she behaves in a remarkably childish manner, a trait that leads to her being patronized by nearly everyone around her, from her workplace superiors to elementary school children. Her immaturity is also reflected in her habit of talking in her sleep and her close, conversational relationship with her prized teddy bear named Aeolus, whom she considers her best friend.
Kaneru’s primary motivation is to succeed in the world of fan-made comics. Initially, she had no particular interest in drawing male-male romance narratives, a genre often referred to as yaoi. However, she is convinced to try this genre by a more experienced fellow dojinshi artist named Tsuyuri, who also goes by the pen name Pantsuko. After this artistic transformation, Kaneru becomes a dedicated creator of yaoi dojinshi, often drawing inspiration from her own fantasies involving a pairing of two male characters named Justice and Hoshi. Her identification with this genre runs deep; she eventually reaches a point where she cannot see two men together, regardless of the nature of their relationship, without considering the romantic or sexual possibilities between them.
Within the story, Kaneru serves as a central figure whose struggles highlight the difficulties of breaking into the dojinshi world. Her role is largely defined by her rivalry with another dojinshi artist, Osana Najimi. The two are considered to be on a similar, low level of artistic ability, and they compete with each other. Despite her high hopes and hard work, Kaneru’s initial forays into selling her books are a failure, and she cannot sell a single copy at her first conventions. Although she eventually gains a degree of success over time, her friends are quick to discourage her from quitting her day job to draw full-time, constantly reminding her of the value and security of steady employment.
Key relationships heavily influence Kaneru’s development. Her friendship with Tsuyuri is instrumental, as it redirects her entire artistic focus toward yaoi. Her rivalry with Najimi pushes her to improve, while her bond with her teddy bear, Aeolus, provides her with emotional support and highlights her childish nature. Over the course of the narrative, Kaneru develops from a completely inexperienced novice with unfocused dreams into a more dedicated, if still somewhat hapless, dojinshi creator with a specific specialty. Her notable abilities are few, but she demonstrates a capacity for intense focus and enthusiasm, as well as a vivid imagination that fuels her yaoi fantasies; her more concrete skill is her ability to sleep-talk.
