Description
Hinata Sugai is a first-year student who enters the Saienji Temple Academy in the second anime series, Amaenaide yo!! Katsu!!. She is the younger adopted sister of Sakura Sugai, a third-year student and the school council president. Physically, Hinata is recognizable by her long purple hair and her generally calm and stoic demeanor. She is a character of few words, rarely speaking and often appearing reserved or detached from the chaotic situations that unfold around her.
In the narrative, Hinata serves as a central focus for the more serious and dramatic arc of the second season. She is the representative of the Naraka Realm, also known as the Hell Realm, a position that comes with a unique and dangerous spiritual power known as her bosatsu. A constant companion to her is a small, fire-spitting demonic pet. This creature remains in a diminutive form under normal circumstances, but it converts into a full-sized demon whenever Hinata is unable to suppress the power of her Naraka bosatsu, signifying a loss of control. Her primary motivation throughout the story is to overcome and master this unstable power, which poses a threat to herself and others.
Hinata's role in the story heavily involves the protagonist, Ikkou Satonaka. She is sent on a special training mission to the Saichouji temple alongside Ikkou, where the high priestess Miyako Amanogawa forces Hinata to confront her inner demons directly. This training culminates in a final test inside Danda Cave, a location close to the underworld, where Hinata must relinquish her ties to her demonic associates to master her powers. During this period, Ikkou acts as her key supporter and partner. Later in the series, when Ikkou is on the verge of a dangerous awakening of his own powers, Hinata frequently commands her demon to burn him. While this is partly out of necessity to prevent his transformation, she sometimes does so casually, as if for her own amusement.
Beyond the main plot, Hinata has a quieter, more intellectual side. Her hobby is collecting and studying haniwa, which are ancient Japanese terracotta clay figures. Her passion for this subject leads her to join the Haniwa Research Club, which is noted as the smallest club at the school. In one episode, she forces Ikkou to participate in a haniwa excavation, an event that ultimately forces her to reveal the true extent of her powers. Her key relationship is with her older sister, Sakura, to whom she is devoted. She also develops a connection with the rival monk Kazuki Kazusano, often interacting with her during joint missions and training. While it is hinted that Hinata may have feelings for Ikkou, the nature of that affection remains ambiguous, leaving it unclear whether she sees him as a brother figure or something more.
