Description
Phyllo is a character in the anime.hack//Roots, where he exists as an avatar within the online game known as The World R:2. His player in the real world is Kojirou Nakamura, a sixty-two-year-old man who lives alone with a dog and two cats. Terminally ill with cancer, Nakamura has chosen to spend the remainder of his life inside The World in the role of a sage, and this decision shapes everything about the character as he appears in the game.
Within the game, Phyllo is a Harvest Cleric of the Tu Tribe, one of the small animal-like races available to players. He appears as a small figure with brown fur, blonde hair, and magenta eyes, dressed in a dark gray robe. One of his most distinctive traits is that he hovers slightly as he moves, giving him an airy, almost ghostlike presence, and he also has a tail. When he is forced into combat, he wields a gnarled wooden staff carved with a dragon head. Despite his small and unassuming appearance, he carries himself with a calm and wise demeanor that others immediately recognize.
Phyllo's personality is defined by patience, quiet observation, and a willingness to share his knowledge. He is known as a talker rather than a fighter, and he prefers to offer counsel over taking direct action. He seems to know a great deal about The World R:2, including its hidden mysteries and the various players, guilds, and factions that inhabit it, though he rarely reveals everything he understands at once. His motivation is not tied to personal ambition or power; instead, he appears driven by a desire to live out his remaining time meaningfully as a guiding presence and to help others make sense of the game and their place within it.
Phyllo plays the role of a community landmark in the story. He is almost always found sitting on the same bridge in the Root Town of Mac Anu, and over time he becomes one of the most well-known players in the game. People of all classes, levels, and backgrounds come to him for advice, and he serves as a quiet observer of the events unfolding around the series' main characters. He is present at key moments in the town, such as when he speaks with the character Naobi, and he demonstrates an awareness of events that suggests he is far more connected to the game's deeper workings than he openly lets on. His level is quite high, which allows him to travel throughout the game without fear of player killers, even though he prefers not to engage in conflict.
In terms of relationships, Phyllo is associated with some of the more mysterious and significant figures in the story. He had a past friendship with Ovan, the enigmatic leader of the Twilight Brigade, and he also helped Haseo during the early part of the series. His history includes at least one encounter with Tri-Edge, the player killer connected to the central conflict of the narrative, which ties him to the dangers lurking beneath the surface of the game. In later related material, his character is noted as being connected to another player through an old man's bequest, and he appears again guiding Haseo toward a location containing weapons useful against the AIDA threat, but within.hack//Roots itself his role is primarily that of a mentor-like witness rather than a central actor.
Phyllo does not undergo dramatic personal development during the series; his arc is understated by design. He begins as a wise and enigmatic presence and remains one throughout, but his importance grows through the influence he has on others and the quiet support he offers at crucial turning points. His notable abilities include his hovering movement, his competence with his staff when he is forced into battle, his high level and combat resilience, and above all his deep knowledge of the game's lore and his reputation as a trusted adviser within the player community.
