Description
Al Azif is the physical manifestation of the Necronomicon, the legendary and most powerful grimoire in existence, within her fictional universe. Her name is drawn from the fictional text within the Cthulhu Mythos, an Arabic word meaning the nocturnal sound of insects that was believed to be the howling of demons. Having existed for over a millennium, with an age cited at approximately 1200 years, she was originally penned by the Mad Arab Abdul Alhazred. Throughout her long existence, she has been bound to many masters, over a thousand according to some sources, serving as a source of arcane power and a pilot for massive magical robots known as Deus Machina. When first encountered, she is being pursued by the sinister organization Black Lodge, leading her to form a contract with a down-on-his-luck detective named Kurou Daijuuji.

In terms of personality, Al Azif presents a striking contrast between her youthful appearance and her ancient, arrogant nature. She manifests as a young girl with silver or lavender hair, jade green eyes, and small, book-like wings floating behind her. Her typical attire is a frilly white dress with red ribbons. Despite her delicate looks, her demeanor is characterized by an immense ego, impudence, and a strong sense of superiority over others, often coming across as ill-tempered and bratty. She is direct, bold, and becomes impatient with those who hesitate in dangerous situations. However, this abrasive exterior masks deeper complexities. Having been treated as a tool or weapon by her previous masters for centuries, she has developed a cynical self-defense mechanism, viewing her contractors as mere instruments for piloting her Deus Machina. She also carries a tremendous burden of guilt for the masters she has lost in battle.

Her primary motivation, and thus her core role in the story, is to hunt down and destroy unholy powers and entities aligned with the evil gods of the Cthulhu Mythos. She is the key that activates the giant robot Demonbane and transforms her contracted magician into a superhuman warrior known as a Magius. When her master, Kurou, undergoes this transformation, Al Azif herself changes into a smaller, super-deformed or chibi version of herself, with her outfit turning black and her wing-like appendages forming a hat. She serves as the secondary pilot of Demonbane, using her vast magical knowledge to empower the machine and analyze enemy capabilities.

The most significant relationship in her development is with Kurou Daijuuji. Unlike any of her previous masters, Kurou is the first person to treat her not as a weapon or a tool, but as a person. This fundamental shift in their dynamic causes her to lower her emotional defenses. Her character arc involves moving from a place of cynical detachment to one of genuine affection, and she eventually falls in love with him. This relationship also brings her into contact with other key figures, such as Ruri Hadou, the young head of the powerful Hadou Financial Group, who can temporarily become her master in certain circumstances. A mysterious and significant detail about her background is that she is called Mother by the antagonist Ana Zabrad, hinting at a deep and complex connection to the forces of evil she opposes.

Al Azif possesses an enormous array of supernatural abilities. As the Necronomicon incarnate, she has access to a near-limitless wealth of forbidden knowledge and can perform high-level magic, including casting powerful energy blasts, summoning and binding eldritch creatures, and manipulating elements such as fire and ice through spells like Cthugha and Ithaqua. She can create powerful magical barriers for defense, open dimensional gates for travel, and has telepathic and telekinetic abilities. Her power is such that she can significantly enhance a Deus Machina's capabilities. However, her abilities are not without limits. At the beginning of the story, much of her power is sealed because many of her pages are lost or scattered. Furthermore, she rapidly loses energy and cannot sustain her full power for long without being contracted to a master, highlighting the symbiotic nature of her bond with a magician.
