Description
Raika Crusade, whose given name is also transliterated as Leica or Laika, is a nun who runs a small, aging church and orphanage on the outskirts of Arkham City. She is an adult woman with shoulder-length blonde hair, blue-green eyes, and round glasses, and she spends her days caring for the orphans who live under her roof.

Raika has been part of Kurou Daijuuji's life since before he became a detective. She is one of the few people who knew him during his time at Miskatonic University, before he dropped out, and she has continued to watch over him ever since. Because Kurou's private detective business rarely brings in steady income, she regularly provides him with meals and lets him depend on her support between cases.

Her personality is kind, warm, and genuinely charitable. She is trusting to the point of naivety, rarely suspecting others of ill intent, which can make her seem absent-minded or gullible. At the same time, she is not merely sweet; she lectures Kurou daily over his failure to support himself and urges him to improve his situation. Her advice tends to be simple enough for a child to understand, and for that reason it often cuts directly to the heart of a problem. Her sharp tongue is paired with a caring nature and a strong sense of responsibility for all the wayward people she has taken under her wing. In some later novel and drama CD versions of the story, her characterization was expanded into a more comedic and self-absorbed one, with her depicted as a woman oddly fixated on her own popularity.

Raika's motivations are rooted in compassion and duty. She wants to protect the orphans in her care, keep Kurou from ruining himself through poverty and neglect, and preserve the ordinary, peaceful life that the church represents. She is, in practical terms, the closest thing Kurou has to steady family, and the stability she offers him stands in quiet contrast to the supernatural battles that consume his daily life.

In the main story, Raika functions as a supporting figure rather than a combatant. Her role is to anchor Kurou's everyday existence and give him a place of refuge and warmth. Her key relationship is with Kurou, whom she feeds, shelters, and scolds in equal measure, and her care for him runs deep enough that it may go beyond the duties of a caretaker. She is equally devoted to the orphans of the church, treating them as her own charges.

Under ordinary circumstances Raika shows no combat ability; her strengths are patience, generosity, and a talent for simple wisdom. However, some expanded portrayals present a far more formidable side of the character, depicting her as highly skilled in blood sorcery and as the pilot of a blood-red variant of the Demonbane machine known as Demonbane Blood. In those portrayals she is openly hostile toward Al Azif, seeking to devour her to gain her power, while remaining noticeably more affectionate toward Kurou. These darker abilities sit uneasily beside her compassionate everyday persona and belong to expanded material rather than her role in the main storyline.
