Description
Ayame Sarutobi, known as Sa-chan or Sacchan, trained with the shogunate's secret ninja group, the Oniwabanshuu. Following their disbandment, she became a professional assassin targeting evil individuals while working part-time at the Kunoichi Café. Her assignments necessitate frequent moves, yet she consistently stays near Kabukicho to remain close to Sakata Gintoki.

Severely nearsighted, she cannot differentiate living beings from objects without her glasses, inherited from her late grandmother. Even with corrective lenses, her vision falters, leading to comedic misidentifications like confusing a disguised Kagura for Gintoki. This impairment creates recurring vulnerabilities during her missions.

She initially manipulated Gintoki to evade pursuers after a botched assassination. After he saved her despite uncovering her deceit, she developed an obsessive infatuation. She stalks his routines, hides in improbable locations near his office, and interprets his aggressive insults and physical rejections as affectionate attention. This dynamic solidified her masochistic tendencies, solely directed at him.

Professionally, she wields exceptional kunai-throwing accuracy, navigates rooftops with athletic prowess, and employs unconventional tactics like weaponizing natto. Her combat skills emerge during the Shogun Assassination Arc, where she reunites with surviving Oniwabanshuu to protect Shogun Shigeshige Tokugawa. She exposes hidden enemies among allies and battles fiercely on an enemy vessel, sustaining injuries from Shinsuke Takasugi before Gintoki and allies rescue her.

She considers Tae Shimura and Tsukuyo romantic rivals, sparking frequent comedic confrontations. Despite this rivalry, she genuinely urges Tae to fight an illness in the movie "Be Forever Yorozuya." Her loyalty extends to Kabukicho's residents, evident when she emotionally confronts Kagura over perceived disrespect.

In alternate narratives, the "Dekkoboko" arc depicts her male counterpart displaying sexist behavior. The "Class 3-Z" spinoff reimagines her as a health committee member obsessed with "Teacher Ginpachi," while the "Golden Soul" arc portrays her as a host club regular.

Her surname references the historical ninja Sarutobi Sasuke, mirroring her infiltration of Tokugawa Castle to thwart Shigeshige's assassination. Childhood peers coined "Sacchan" by replacing "Saru" (monkey) with "Sa" to dodge mockery.
