Description
Kaede Nagase is a student in Mahora Girls' Junior High Class 3-A, recognized as one of the more unique and capable members of her class. Born on November 12, she is notably tall with light brown hair and eyes, and a calm, steady presence that often makes her stand out from her peers.
Her personality is defined by a gentle and easy-going nature, which is visually represented by her almost perpetually half-closed eyes. This relaxed demeanor is rarely broken, and seeing her fully open one or both eyes indicates a situation of great importance or seriousness. Her speech is distinctive, often ending sentences with the archaic "de gozaru" and addressing others with the honorific "-dono", speech patterns that echo a historical samurai aesthetic and reflect her traditional training.
Kaede comes from the Koga ninja clan, though she was born a generation too late to receive formal training from her parents, who did not carry on the family traditions. As a result, she is largely self-taught, honing her skills through rigorous solitary training in the mountains. Despite her low academic scores, which place her in the informal "Baka Rangers" group of underachievers as "Baka Blue," this is not a reflection of her intelligence but rather of where she chooses to dedicate her time and effort.
In the story, Kaede is one of the first students to discover her teacher Negi Springfield's secret magic abilities. When Negi fled into the woods during a conflict with Evangeline, Kaede found him while training and offered quiet comfort and encouragement, helping to cheer him up. She later became a crucial ally in the mission to Kyoto to rescue their classmate Konoka, where she demonstrated her formidable skills by defeating the young demon hunter Kotarou. Her initial role is that of a quiet observer who becomes one of Negi's most dependable guardians.
Her key relationships are built on loyalty and mutual respect. With Negi, she forms a strong bond, and after making a Pactio with him—a magical contract—she declares him her new master while positioning herself as his servant, acting as a surrogate mother figure and protector. Her rivalry with Kotarou evolves into a productive training partnership, where she teaches him many of her ninja techniques. She also shares a notable rivalry with her classmate, the gun-wielding mercenary Mana Tatsumiya, with whom she has fought to a draw and engages in a long-running, comedic competition.
Throughout the series, Kaede undergoes significant development from a solitary mountain trainer to a key member of the Ala Alba, a group formed to help Negi on his journey. In the Magical World arc, after being separated from her friends, she is found slaying dragons and surviving on her own, showcasing her incredible self-reliance. Her abilities grow to the point where she can fight on par with powerful mages, and she consistently uses her skills not just for combat but to support and transport her allies.
Her notable abilities are extensive and rooted in ninjutsu, which she refers to as her "Kaede ninpou" or "Kaede ninja arts". She is an expert hand-to-hand combatant, but her true power lies in a range of supernatural techniques. These include Kage Bunshin, the ability to create tangible shadow clones of herself; Shukuchi, a technique that allows for instantaneous movement over short distances; and the devastating Bakusa Bakuenjin, a technique that ensnares an enemy with a chained shuriken before causing a massive explosion.
Her most unique ability comes from her Pactio artifact, named Tengu no Kakuremino, or Speculatrix Clandestina. This artifact is a cloak that allows her to become invisible and phase into another plane of reality, which contains a traditional Japanese house complete with a kitchen. This ability is incredibly versatile, used for stealth, transport, absorbing enemy attacks, and safely catching people who are falling. By the story's end, her mastery of space-manipulating techniques reaches such a height that she becomes able to traverse space at will, always appearing instantly whenever a classmate is in danger, earning her the reputation of a dependable "Ninja of the Space Age".
