Description
Futaba Ichinose is the primary protagonist of the story and a rookie voice actress affiliated with the agency Aozora Production. Her background is that of a young woman who entered the challenging voice acting industry purely out of interest, having grown up watching anime like many ordinary people, though she did not develop into a deep otaku. To support herself between voice acting gigs, she works part-time at a convenience store. A notable personal item she owns is a stuffed doll named Korori-chan, a character from her favorite childhood anime, which she often talks to or voices to give herself encouragement.

In terms of personality, Futaba is characterized as being shy and extremely unsure of her own abilities. She has a strong tendency to overthink every aspect of the performance she needs to give, which often leads to anxiety, especially in high-pressure situations like recording sessions. She is easily distracted and is known to be bad at promoting herself, lacking a strong understanding of her own strengths. This leads to a pattern of heroic self-deprecation, as she frequently worries about being the weakest link when compared to her peers and often apologizes for her perceived shortcomings. Despite these insecurities, she is deeply motivated and driven to succeed, possessing a quiet determination to continue working as a voice actress for a long time.

Futaba's primary role in the story is to provide a window into the harsh realities of the voice acting business from the perspective of a newcomer. Her journey involves being thrown into a variety of jobs, ranging from anime recording and narration to dubbing foreign films and running a web radio show. A significant part of her role is as a member of the voice actress unit Earphones, which she forms alongside her two fellow rookies, Ichigo Moesaki and Rin Kohana. Her key relationships are with these two colleagues. Ichigo is a hyperactive, cheerful girl who often carries the atmosphere, while Rin is a polite but highly skilled junior high school student. Her relationship with them is a source of both support and pressure, as she struggles with jealousy when a role she wanted goes to Rin but ultimately learns to put aside those feelings and support her friend. She also interacts with numerous veteran voice actors who appear as themselves to offer guidance and advice, helping her navigate the industry.

Throughout the narrative, Futaba experiences significant development. Initially, she is a bundle of nerves who fails an impromptu audition and gets passed over for a more experienced actress. As the series progresses, and with experience and advice from her peers and seniors, she gradually becomes more comfortable in her roles. However, this growth is not linear; she often gets discouraged and has to start over, reflecting the cyclical nature of struggling in a competitive field. A key moment in her development is when she fails to reprise a drama CD role in an anime adaptation, which leads to her feeling shocked and depressed, but she eventually overcomes her jealousy and looks forward to her friend's interpretation. By the end of the series, during a critical assessment to determine if she can stay with her agency, she works up the courage to voice her desire to be a voice actress for the long term, resulting in her being granted another year to prove herself.

Notable abilities include her talent for voicing boy characters, which she demonstrates so effectively that she surprises her friends. She is also shown to be a hard worker who is dedicated to her craft, but she lacks natural dancing skills, which becomes a challenge when Earphones begins performing as idol singers. Her journey is also marked by her learning the importance of self-care, as she once strains her voice from overworking and is cautioned by a veteran about the dangers of pushing too hard.
