Description
Otoha is a Shadow Angel who serves as the secondary antagonist of the anime Genesis of Aquarion. She is the faithful servant and constant companion of Toma, the story's primary antagonist, and her devotion to him defines nearly every aspect of her character. She has remained at his side through the long ages since the Shadow Angels' ancient conflict with humanity, and she continues to support his efforts in the present day.
Her love for Toma is the central force of her personality. She loves him deeply, and her feelings carry a strong possessive and jealous edge. She despises Apollonius and Celiane for two interconnected reasons: they were responsible for the destruction of Atlandia twelve thousand years ago, and, more personally, their love for one another caused Toma great suffering. Her hatred of Apollonius is tied to the fact that Toma's heart still yearns for him, while her resentment of Celiane stems from Celiane having taken Apollonius away from Toma and thereby breaking his heart. Her jealousy is therefore directed at both figures, and it colors her actions throughout the story.
Visually, Otoha resembles a human at first glance, but her arms take the form of wings. In addition, she possesses an extra pair of eyes located where human eyebrows would normally sit, giving her four eyes in total and clearly marking her as something other than human. She is referred to as a Music Angel, a title that reflects her nature as one of the winged Shadow Angels.
As a Shadow Angel, Otoha possesses the supernatural abilities common to her kind, including astral projection, the ability to phase through solid matter, levitation, and telepathy. She also has the power to create a protective barrier using her feathers, which she employs in battle and defense. These abilities make her a formidable opponent and a useful asset to Toma.
Her motivation is to serve Toma faithfully and carry out his commands without question. She follows his every instruction and assists him in his plan to harvest prana from human beings so that the Shadow Angels can be revived. Within the larger conflict, she fills the role of Toma's loyal lieutenant, handling the practical side of the Shadow Angels' operations while he pursues his grander ambitions.
Otoha's character remains largely constant over the course of the narrative. Her devotion to Toma never wavers, and her hatred of Apollonius and Celiane endures without change. Her significance in the story lies chiefly in her relationship with Toma, as her jealousy and resentment mirror the emotional wounds that drive the conflict, and her unconditional loyalty provides Toma with an ally wholly committed to him and his cause.
