Description
Edward is the faithful canine servant of Princess Snow from the land of Lestava in the world of MÄR-Heaven. He is a small dog who is typically seen wearing a pair of glasses, and his demeanor is often described as fidgety and nervous, which sometimes undermines his self-image as a guardian. Despite his anxious nature, his loyalty to Princess Snow is the core of his identity and motivation, driving all his actions throughout the story. He is given the nickname Mr. Doggy by the young girl Belle.

Edward's background is deeply connected to the war against the evil organization known as the Chess Pieces, specifically the first War Games that took place six years before the main events of the story. During this tournament, the knight Alan fought Halloween, one of the Chess Pieces' most powerful warriors, to a draw. As the match ended, Edward, who was cheering enthusiastically for Alan, unknowingly drew the ire of a frustrated and injured Halloween. As punishment, Halloween used a powerful Darkness ÄRM called Igniel to fuse Edward and Alan together, with Edward's small body becoming the main vessel. This act created a complex dual existence where Edward was the primary personality, but Alan remained sealed within him. A rule was placed on the fusion: if Edward fell asleep three times, Alan would emerge, but if Alan fell asleep only once, the form would revert to Edward.

In terms of role in the story, Edward is a key figure from the past who helps guide the present. Having learned of Queen Diana's treacherous plan to assassinate the young Princess Snow, Edward used Alan's power from within to help Snow escape from Lestava Castle. For the following six years, he and the princess evaded the forces of the Chess Pieces, traveling across MÄR-Heaven to the distant island of Pazurika, with the sealed Alan's strength aiding them in their flight. When the main protagonist, Ginta, arrives in MÄR-Heaven, it is Edward who, along with Snow, forms an early alliance with him. He acts as a guide and an observer, accompanying Ginta and his allies on their journey and later during the second War Games.

Edward has several key relationships that define him. His bond with Princess Snow is paramount; he serves as her loyal attendant, though Snow often ends up taking care of him, which pricks at his pride as her protector. His internal relationship with the knight Alan is equally significant. The fusion makes them reluctant partners, but their shared goal of protecting Snow and defeating their enemies leads to a unique coexistence. The personality shift between the nervous Edward and the brave and powerful Alan is a notable trait, as is the eventual consequence of their separation. After the third round of the second War Games, Ginta's Guardian ÄRM, Alice, is used to successfully separate Edward and Alan. Following this event, it is revealed that Alan inherited one of Edward's most prominent quirks: an intense fear of cats.

Edward's development over the course of the narrative is tied to his separation from Alan. Starting as a physically weak and timid being who is utterly devoted to his princess, he endures years of hardship and flight. His journey is one of perseverance, using the power of the knight within him as a last resort. Finally being freed from the fusion curse allows him to resume his role as an independent entity. By the end of the story, having fulfilled his duty to protect Snow and seen the defeat of the Chess Pieces, he is seen in a peaceful setting, attending an important wedding, indicating that his long period of turmoil has finally come to a close.

As for notable abilities, Edward himself possesses very little combat power due to his small size and timid nature. His primary utility is his unwavering loyalty and his knowledge of the world of MÄR-Heaven, which makes him a valuable guide. However, his most significant ability is triggered by sleep. Because he was fused with Alan, whenever Edward falls asleep for the third time, his body transforms into the powerful and battle-hardened knight, Alan. In this form, he gains access to Alan's combat skills and powerful ÄRMs, making him a formidable fighter, though this transformation is not one he can consciously control at will. His only other unique trait, which he passes to Alan, is his notable fear of cats.
