TV-Series
Description
Ian from the anime and manga MÄR is a complex character who begins as an antagonist within the Chess Pieces organization. He is a tall young man with spiky black hair and teal-colored eyes that are often seen squinted, giving him a perpetually casual or unreadable expression. His typical attire consists of a pale yellow robe with maroon cuffs and collar, worn over a blue tank top with brown jogger pants and black flat shoes.
Ian's background reveals that he and his girlfriend, Gido, joined the Chess Pieces sometime after the end of the first great war, under the idealistic wish to help "purify" the world. They started as Pawns, and over time, Ian was promoted to the Rook class. His core personality is a study in contradictions. On the surface, he appears to be a laid-back and jovial individual, notable for his bluntness and willingness to be disrespectful toward his superiors, such as addressing the higher-ranked Loco with a familiar honorific or talking back to the fearsome Knight Halloween. Beneath this amiable facade, however, lies a lethal and battle-thrilled fighter. Once his determination is set, he becomes relentless in pursuit of his goals, whether it is a desired fight or the elimination of an enemy. This tenacity often leads him to disobey orders, a transgression for which he admits he is always mentally prepared to face the death penalty.
The primary driving force for Ian throughout the series is his love for Gido. While his initial motivation for joining the Chess Pieces was his idealistic dream, his devotion to Gido ultimately outweighs all other ambitions and his own well-being. This is put to the ultimate test when, after a defeat that resulted from his disobedience, the Knight Halloween punishes Ian by having Chimera transform Gido into a half-monster. This event shatters Ian's previous aspirations and replaces them with a singular, focused motivation: to save Gido. He resolves to become stronger, entering the Training Gate to train for this purpose. Upon returning, he challenges and kills the Knight Rapunzel, successfully claiming the position of the 7th strongest Knight for himself.
Ian's role in the story is that of a recurring antagonist who eventually defects from the Chess Pieces. He participates in the War Games, where he fights the protagonist, Ginta Toramizu, and suffers his third loss. However, this final defeat has a profound effect, opening his eyes and leading him to discard his Knight earring and quit the Chess Pieces on the spot. This marks his turn away from villainy. He then pursues Chimera for revenge and to undo Gido's transformation. After a fierce battle, he successfully destroys the monster and restores Gido, leading the couple to leave the organization together.
Key relationships define his journey. His bond with Gido is the emotional core of his character; his actions are largely a direct response to her fate. His rivalry with Ginta is also significant, as despite their enmity, Ian's upright nature earns him Ginta's respect. Their battles serve as a catalyst for Ian's changing worldview, and the sympathy between them eventually diminishes their initial hostility. Following their defection, Ian and Gido are taken in by Ash, a former Knight, and they help rebuild the settlement of Edel Mine, seeking to live peacefully.
Ian's development is a clear trajectory from an idealistic but ruthless soldier to a man fighting for personal redemption and love, and finally to someone seeking a quiet life. He begins as a loyal, if insubordinate, member of the Chess Pieces, becomes a vengeance-driven Knight, and concludes as a defector who abandons his former life to protect what he holds dear.
In terms of abilities, Ian is an extremely skillful user of Weapon ÄRMs, specializing in mid-to-long ranged attacks, particularly with whips. His signature early ÄRM is the Python Whip, a pair of snake-shaped whips he conceals in his sleeves for surprise strikes. After his training, he upgrades to Octopus II, a more powerful version of his eight-tentacled whip that features various sharp blades on each tip. He also possesses other Weapon ÄRMs like ÄRM Break, which sprouts various blades from his body, and Moon Fall, which creates crescent-shaped blades to throw at opponents. Beyond Weapon ÄRMs, he wields powerful Darkness ÄRMs, including Demonic Bond, a ring that chains him to an opponent and drains their magical power, risking death for both; and Iron Maiden, another ring that creates a torture device which prevents the use of Holy ÄRMs. He also commands a Guardian ÄRM named Peryton, a legendary hybrid beast. For a short time, he possessed a Holy ÄRM called Healing Angel, which he notably used to heal Gido before giving it to Ginta.
