Description
Elena is a pivotal figure in GUNxSWORD, though her presence is felt almost entirely through memory and loss. She is the late fiancée of the protagonist, Van, and her death at the hands of the mysterious figure known as the Claw man is the central incident that drives the entire narrative forward.

From what can be gathered about her past, Elena was a researcher living on the planet Endless Illusion, where she was involved in the study of the powerful mecha known as Armors, specifically those related to the group known as the Original Seven. It was during this time that she encountered Van, who was working as a talented mercenary. Recognizing his skills, she entrusted him with a crucial role, making him the test pilot for a specific Armor called Dann of Thursday. Their professional relationship gradually deepened. Despite Van initially being portrayed as emotionally reserved and somewhat blunt, Elena came to understand his genuine, unpolished nature. She accepted his courtship, and the two fell in love, eventually becoming engaged and looking forward to a life together.

Tragically, their wedding day became the site of unspeakable violence. The Claw man, a proponent of a cruel ideology that rejects human connection, attacked the ceremony. He murdered Elena simply because she did not share or support his personal philosophy. In her final moments, mortally wounded, her thoughts were not for herself but for Van, who was also critically injured. She used her last breath to plead with a scientist named Garrod to save Van's life, an act that indirectly leads to Van receiving cybernetic enhancements.

Elena's primary role in the story is that of a catalyst. She is the lost love whose memory haunts every step of Van's journey. Her absence defines his personality; his deep-seated anger, his single-minded obsession with finding the Claw man, and his initial reluctance to form new bonds are all rooted in the grief of losing her. Her importance is so fundamental to the protagonist's psyche that, in moments of extreme despair or introspection, Van is shown crying out her name and professing his undying love for her, illustrating that his quest for revenge is also an expression of his profound and unresolved devotion.

While Elena herself does not undergo development, the perception of her relationship with Van provides important context for his character. Her ability to see past his stoic exterior and love him for who he was serves as a benchmark for his later interactions with other characters. The memory of the happiness they shared stands in stark contrast to the lonely, grief-stricken life Van leads throughout the series.

Regarding her abilities, Elena is not a fighter. Her strengths lie in her intellect and her compassionate nature. As a researcher of Armor technology, she possessed significant scientific knowledge, enough to be directly involved with powerful weapons like Dann. More notably, her personal strength was her emotional intelligence; she had the patience and understanding to connect with a man like Van, and her final act was one of selfless love, pleading for his life rather than her own. Visually, the series reinforces that she is a symbol first and a person second; her appearance is intentionally never fully shown, with her face often obscured or hidden in concept art. This technique makes her a universal embodiment of lost love, rather than a specific individual.
