Dragon Shiryu numbered among one hundred orphans gathered by Mitsumasa Kido and dispatched worldwide for saint training. He journeyed to the Five Ancient Peaks of Lushan in China, training under the Gold Saint Libra Dohko, the Old Master. After six arduous years, Shiryu conquered his final trial by reversing a waterfall's flow, claiming the Dragon Bronze Cloth. Bonds formed during his training with Dohko and Shunrei, resident at Lushan. The Dragon constellation bestowed a distinctive mark: a green and white dragon manifestation on his back, fueled by his Cosmo energy. This mark faded as his life force waned, vanishing entirely at death's approach. Returning to Japan for the Galaxian Wars tournament, Shiryu faced Pegasus Seiya. Their clash exposed a critical vulnerability in Shiryu's Rising Dragon technique, momentarily leaving his heart unprotected. Seiya exploited this flaw, stopping Shiryu's heart, though later reviving him. This encounter prompted Shiryu to question his reliance on the legendary defenses of his Cloth, especially its near-indestructible shield. He subsequently adopted the practice of discarding his armor in dire straits to prove his inherent strength. When Phoenix Ikki stole the Sagittarius Gold Cloth, Shiryu traveled to Jamir for repairs. There, he sacrificed his own blood to revive the damaged Pegasus and Dragon Cloths, nearly succumbing to death. He later confronted and defeated the Black Dragon Saints, saved from fatal blood loss by an unexpected intervention from one among them. Battling Silver Saints, Shiryu faced Perseus Algol, whose shield petrified opponents. To counter this power and save his petrified allies, Shiryu blinded himself, overcoming the shield's curse and defeating Algol. Retreating to Lushan to adapt to blindness, he faced Cancer Deathmask when the assassin arrived to kill Dohko. Shiryu intervened. As Deathmask attacked Shunrei remotely, Shiryu's fury awakened his Seventh Sense. This resurgence of power restored his sight and enabled him to defeat Deathmask. In the subsequent assault on the Sanctuary to save Athena, Shiryu confronted Capricorn Shura. After a brutal fight, Shiryu unleashed the forbidden suicide technique Rozan Kō Ryū Ha. Impressed by his resolve, the dying Shura saved Shiryu by encasing him in his Gold Cloth and bestowed the Excalibur technique, focusing Cosmo into a blade-like edge on Shiryu's right arm. During the Poseidon conflict, Shiryu battled the Mariner General Chrysaor Krishna, whose spear pierced even the Dragon Shield. Severely wounded and blinded again, Shiryu channeled Excalibur, severing Krishna's seven chakra points to destroy his spear and armor. He then shattered the Pillar of the Pacific Ocean using the Libra Gold Cloth's sword. In the Hades war, Shiryu awakened the Eighth Sense, granting entry to the Underworld. His Cloth was later anointed with Athena's blood by Aries Shion, evolving it into the God Cloth for the Elysium battle. There, alongside Cygnus Hyoga, he defeated the god Hypnos. In the sequel *Next Dimension*, Shiryu lived peacefully in China with Shunrei and their adopted son Shoryu. Recruited by Hyoga, he traveled back to the 18th-century Holy War. Proving his worth to a younger Dohko, Shiryu was designated the future Libra Gold Saint. In *Saint Seiya Omega*, years later, Shiryu married Shunrei and fathered a son, Ryūhō. An accident cost him all five senses, forcing his retirement as the Dragon Saint and passing the role to Ryūhō. After the defeat of the god Abzu, his senses were restored, but he maintained his retired status. When war erupted against the Pallasites, Shiryu joined the assault wearing the inherited Libra Gold Cloth. Throughout his battles, Shiryu employed techniques mastered at Lushan: the Rising Dragon Punch (Rozan Shō Ryū Ha), the horizontal dragon charge (Rozan Ryū Hi Shō), and the Hundred Dragons technique (Rozan Hyaku Ryū Ha), perfected during his blindness while observing Dohko. His fighting style blended martial arts mastery with tactical intelligence, frequently leveraging self-sacrifice for victory, demonstrated by the suicide attack Rozan Kō Ryū Ha and his repeated willingness to endure blindness or severe injury.
