Description
Haruka is a central character from the anime Tactics, a supernatural series set in Japan's Taisho period. He is an oni-eating tengu, a powerful type of youkai known as a heavenly dog or goblin, and is recognized as the strongest of all youkai. Prior to the events of the story, Haruka had been sealed away within a rock in a mountainous, forested area for an extended period. He is released from this seal by Kantarou Ichinomiya, a folklorist and exorcist who had been searching for the legendary creature since childhood. By giving him the name Haruka, which can mean "far away" or "distant," Kantarou becomes his master. This naming establishes a binding contract that forces Haruka to obey any order given to him when his name is spoken.
In terms of personality, Haruka is typically stoic, taciturn, and prefers to keep his distance from others. He often acts as the "straight man" to Kantarou's more lighthearted and comedic tendencies, frequently becoming annoyed or openly rebelling against his master's sometimes petty or self-serving requests. Haruka is also known for his deadpan snark and his impressive ability to attract the attention and affection of women, which in turn generates jealousy from Kantarou. Despite his aloof exterior, he is deeply troubled by his own existence. He struggles with a complete lack of memories concerning his past, including the reason he was sealed away, and is further distressed by his inability to eat other youkai, an act that once defined his nature as an oni-eating tengu. This loss of power and purpose begins to affect his sense of self. A notable quirk in his personality is his fierce protectiveness over his personal belongings, particularly his bowl, which can provoke a terrifying rage in him if anyone dares to touch it.
Haruka's primary role in the story is as Kantarou's companion and protector, using his immense power to assist in exorcisms and investigations involving malevolent spirits. The central conflict of the series revolves around his relationship with Kantarou. While they become close friends, the master-servant dynamic is a persistent element, and villains like Raiko Minamoto seek to exploit this by attempting to break their pact and force Haruka to revert to his wild, uncontrollable true nature. His key relationships are with the other members of his household. His bond with Kantarou is the most significant, evolving from a simple contractual obligation into a deep, tested friendship built on mutual reliance and care. He also lives with Youko, a kitsune (fox spirit) also named by Kantarou, who helps him navigate human society, such as teaching him how to charm humans for financial gain.
Throughout the series, Haruka experiences significant development, primarily driven by the gradual return of his lost memories. These recollections, often manipulated by antagonistic forces, are deeply troubling. He remembers that his previous name was Rin, given to him by a former master who was an onmyōdō practitioner. The nature of that past relationship was poor, with hints that this master took advantage of his subservient status in a sexual manner. As his memories resurface, he is tormented by the recollection of his past actions and his previous sealing, leading to moments of half-crazed desperation and a transformation back into the terrifying demon-eating goblin of legend. His journey is one of reconciling his past identity with his present bonds, ultimately choosing to remain with Kantarou.
Haruka possesses a notable set of abilities. In his default form, he appears as a tall, dark-haired man who can hide or reveal a pair of large black wings. Among his most prominent powers is the ability to control and summon lightning, often channeled through a staff he carries. When fighting, especially against other oni or when enraged, he can transform into his true youkai form. In this state, his appearance becomes far more monstrous and feral: his nails grow into sharp, long claws, his fangs lengthen, his eyes constrict, and a powerful, ferocious aura radiates from him.
