Description
Akio Kawaguchi is a recurring character in the anime Desert Punk, recognized as the middle child among the three Kawaguchi brothers who work together as mercenaries in the post-apocalyptic Great Kanto Desert. At nineteen years old, he is a young man of muscular build, though not as heavily built as his older brother Fuyuo. He has shaggy brown hair, which distinguishes him from his siblings who have black or blue hair, and a small scar located on the bottom right of his chin. As a member of the Mugen-Ya Handyman Guild, he wears the organization's standard sunshade, which for him bears the kanji symbol for the number two to signify his position as the middle brother. His typical attire includes a white mask, a canteen worn around his neck, an orange shirt, and dark green pants worn under his mercenary gear.

Akio grew up alongside his siblings Fuyuo, Natsuko, and Haruo in Water Station 30. Their childhood was significantly influenced by Kanta Mizuno, the mercenary who would later become known as Desert Punk. In his younger years, Kanta convinced Akio and his brothers to engage in various misdeeds, including stealing from local shops and bullying other children. However, this relationship turned violently sour when Kanta attempted to assault their sister Natsuko. Upon learning of this, Akio and his brothers beat Kanta within an inch of his life, and the childhood dynamic between them became one of animosity rather than friendship.

Among the three Kawaguchi brothers, Akio is portrayed as the most cautious and self-reliant. He maintains a strict personal rule of purifying his own drinking water and refuses to trust anyone else to do this task for him. This particular habit proves its value when soldiers from the Rain Spider faction poison the water supply in the West Oasis tank; Akio remains unaffected while many others fall ill. He also demonstrates a fierce protective instinct toward his sister Natsuko, once becoming enraged at a soldier who spoke ill of her, though Natsuko herself intervenes to stop the argument before it escalates.

Akio’s role in the story is closely tied to his family. He consistently works alongside his two brothers on missions for their mercenary guild. As the narrative progresses, the Kawaguchi siblings become members of the Reverse Handyman Guild, an anti-mainstream faction within the West Oasis Government. This transition occurs through different circumstances depending on the version of the story. In the anime, they follow a man named Ikeda into an underground city where Natsuko invites them to join the group. In the manga, Kanta drags the brothers into the rebel faction as part of a larger scheme.

When war breaks out between the West and South Oases, Akio follows his sister Natsuko’s orders, a dynamic that continues for over three years of conflict. He is assigned to an infiltration team called B Team, led by a man named Ikemitsu, with the objective of saving a character named Taiko Koizumi from enemy territory. After successfully rescuing her, Akio is tasked with guarding another character, Mitsuru, to prevent him from leaving his designated post. When enemy forces discover their infiltration, Akio guides Taiko and Mitsuru to safety, though he is briefly captured after doubting Taiko’s instincts about nearby enemy officers. The team eventually escapes, and Akio’s responsibilities shift as Natsuko takes over watching both Mitsuru and Taiko.

Approximately three years and ten months into the war, Akio is patrolling near Natsuko’s station when he is struck down by a stun bullet from Western troops. He is rescued by Taiko and Mitsuru, and he reports seeing a bright flash of light that disoriented his senses of sight and hearing. Ikemitsu identifies this as likely new technology. Due to the head injury he sustains, Akio remains at the camp while others continue the mission. About a week later, he visits a hospitalized Taiko and attempts to convince her to escape while he steals Hulon research from the West Oasis Government. He asks whether their captured comrades were tortured, and Taiko assures him they were not. Before leaving, he asks her to convey his regards to Natsuko.

In terms of his abilities, Akio is a trained mercenary proficient in combat and survival in the harsh desert environment. His caution and self-discipline, particularly regarding water purification, serve as practical survival skills that give him an edge in situations where others are vulnerable. He operates effectively as part of a team with his brothers and follows military orders during wartime operations, participating in infiltration missions and engaging in direct combat with enemy soldiers. His physical strength and combat training allow him to handle himself in violent confrontations, though he is not immune to the superior technology or tactics employed by enemy forces.
