Description
Ai is a young half-demon child who appears in the fourth animated film of the series, serving as a central figure in its narrative. Her background is deeply tied to Hōrai Island, a mystical land that materializes once every fifty years. She is the youngest among a small group of half-demon children living on the island, a community that includes Asagi, Dai, Roku, Shion, and Moegi. Unlike her companions, Ai is unique in that she does not bear the mark of the Four War Gods, a cursed scar that binds its victims to the island and makes them targets for the gods’ cruel purposes. Because she lacks this mark, Ai is the only one of the children who can leave Hōrai Island without being immediately pursued or suffering fatal consequences.

In terms of personality, Ai is depicted as innocent and optimistic, often displaying a bright outlook even when faced with dire circumstances. Her youth means she does not always fully grasp the severity of the dangers around her, but this naivety is paired with a strong-willed nature. She refuses to abandon her friends despite the clear threat posed by the War Gods, demonstrating a quiet bravery and loyalty that belie her small stature. Ai looks up to the older half-demon children, particularly Asagi, and forms a significant attachment to Inuyasha after he rescues her.

Ai’s role in the story is that of a catalyst. At the beginning of the film, she is forced to flee Hōrai Island by the older children, who wish to protect her from the fate that awaits them. She is discovered on a beach by Inuyasha and his companions, who defeat one of the War Gods to save her. Once safe, Ai recognizes Inuyasha, hinting at his past visit to the island fifty years prior with the priestess Kikyō. She then pleads with the group to return to the island with her to save the friends she left behind, setting the main plot of the film into motion. Throughout the journey back to Hōrai, Ai acts as a guide and a symbol of the innocence the group is fighting to protect.

Her key relationships are defined by her found family. She considers the other half-demon children her brothers and sisters, though they are not related by blood. This bond is the central motivation for all her actions. She also develops a strong relationship with Inuyasha, who sees echoes of his own struggles as a half-demon in her plight. She looks up to him as a protector and hero, believing firmly in his ability to save the others.

Physically, Ai is a small, slender child with peach-colored skin, blue eyes, and purple hair typically tied in a messy bun with a strand of pearls. Her half-demon heritage is most visible in her ears, which are blue and shaped like fins, suggesting her demon ancestry is that of a fish or aquatic creature. She wears a simple pink dress and is usually barefoot. In terms of notable abilities, Ai does not display any overt combat skills or magical powers. However, she possesses a form of immense durability; throughout the film, she endures violent explosions, being thrown through the air, and other dangerous physical impacts without sustaining serious injury, a resilience shared by the other half-demon children. It is also implied that her aquatic heritage might grant her some unknown abilities in the water.

Throughout the film, Ai undergoes subtle but clear development. Initially, she is a child who must be ordered by her elders to flee for her own safety, reluctantly obeying out of trust for them. Over the course of the story, she transitions from a passive escapee to an active participant in her own rescue mission. By the end of the film, after the Four War Gods are defeated and the cursed marks vanish, Ai has grown strong enough to leave the island behind permanently. She sets out into the outside world alongside the other surviving half-demon children, finally free to seek a new life and future without fear.
