Description
Elfriede is a vampire girl who initially serves as a loyal servant to the fearsome Count Heinrich von Kinkel. Her primary mission at the beginning of the story is to retrieve the young vampire Hazuki and return her to the castle of Count Kinkel, from whom Hazuki had escaped. Unlike Hazuki, who is a rare "blue-blood" or true vampire, Elfriede is a "Ludo," a human who was chosen by a master and turned into a vampire, binding her to the will of the "blue blood" who bit her.
Elfriede’s personality is marked by a strong sense of duty and a fierce determination to accomplish her goals, but she also possesses a complex inner world shaped by centuries of servitude and misery. She declares herself a rival to Hazuki for the affections of the human photographer Kouhei Morioka, showing a desire for connection and freedom beyond her given orders. Her motivations evolve from simply following the Count's commands to seeking a way to liberate herself from his tyranny, which she ultimately achieves by drinking Kouhei's blood, thereby escaping the Count's controlling curse. This act of drinking from a human known as an "Ama Lamia" or the "vampire's lover" is considered highly valuable among vampires, as it is believed to be the partner who can give them freedom.
In the story, Elfriede is a formidable antagonist before becoming a crucial ally. She initially battles Hazuki and Kouhei, but her curiosity about their relationship leads her to pay them a second visit to learn more about the bond between the "master" and her "servant". After Count Kinkel comes to Japan to personally retrieve Hazuki, Elfriede eventually turns against him and joins forces with Kouhei, Hazuki, and Ryuuhei to defeat the powerful vampire lord in the final battle. Following Count Kinkel's defeat, she remains in Kouhei’s house and becomes a good friend and understanding companion to Hazuki.
Elfriede's backstory reveals a deep source of tragedy and pain, which is explored in detail and serves as a major moment of character development. She is the biological daughter of Count Kinkel. The Count seduced her human mother and drove her insane. He later returned when Elfriede was a teenager, killed the human relatives who raised her, and forcibly turned her into a vampire. In an act of ultimate cruelty, he forced her to drink the blood of her best friend, Nina, condemning her to a life of anguish. For centuries, she lived as the Count's tortured slave, finding her only comfort in the vow to live as long as possible for the life she had robbed from Nina. Her development culminates in a tearful recounting of her past to Grandpa Ryuuhei, who offers her comfort, and the two ultimately become a couple.
As a vampire, Elfriede possesses several notable abilities consistent with classic vampire lore. She is often depicted wearing a cape with a high collar and is capable of summoning a giant bat creature to aid her in battle. She can also use a hypnotic gaze. Her knowledge of higher vampire abilities is extensive; she explains that Count Kinkel's greatest power is bending light to change his appearance or become invisible, which allows him to walk in daylight.
