Description
Cha Sihyeok, known in the original Japanese version as Natsume Hyuuga, is a central character in the story. He is a ten-year-old student in the elementary division of the Alice Academy, where he is placed in Class B and also belongs to the Dangerous Ability class due to the nature of his power. Born on November 27, his appearance is marked by short, dark hair and red or crimson eyes, though in the anime adaptation his eye color was changed to brown. He wears special piercings on his ears, which are devices meant to help control his powerful abilities.

Natsume’s life before the academy was marked by constant flight, as his family moved from place to place to evade the academy’s agents who sought to recruit children with special powers. It was during this time that he met and befriended Ruka Nogi, saving him from kidnappers and establishing a bond that would become the most important constant in his life. A tragic incident eventually led to his enrollment: his younger sister, Aoi, lost control of her own fire ability, causing a fire that destroyed their village. To protect his sister from being taken by the academy as a subject, Natsume falsely took the blame for the catastrophe, earning the hatred of the villagers and the reputation of a dangerous criminal. He entered the academy willingly to shield his sister, and Ruka chose to follow him in a show of unwavering loyalty.

On the surface, Natsume presents a cold, aloof, and easily irritated demeanor, keeping most people at a distance. He is frequently truant, disinterested in classes, and deeply suspicious of all adults within the academy, whom he believes exploit the students for their own purposes. This cynical and rebellious front, however, is a facade that hides a deeply kind and fiercely protective person. He is willing to endure immense personal suffering and sacrifice his own freedom and safety for the sake of those he cares about, including his sister, his best friend Ruka, and the younger student Youichi. Beneath his quiet and moody exterior, he possesses a sharp, genius-level intellect, which he occasionally demonstrates when the situation demands it.

His entire perspective begins to shift with the arrival of a new student, Mikan. Initially, Natsume bullies her in a blunt and teasing manner, partly to drive her away from the academy’s dark side. But he soon finds himself drawn to her sincerity, optimism, and refusal to judge him by his fearsome reputation. Mikan becomes a transformative figure in his life, someone he describes as his "light" in the darkness of the academy, and he gradually becomes more open and less isolated because of her. His feelings for her manifest in a classic tsundere fashion, where he alternates between teasing her and showing extreme jealousy whenever other male characters, like their teacher Narumi or the older student Tsubasa, get too close to her. Despite his young age, his devotion to Mikan is profound and absolute, leading him to make significant sacrifices to ensure her safety and happiness.

As the story progresses, Natsume fulfills the role of a double agent of sorts, forced to carry out dangerous, top-secret missions for the academy’s shadowy authorities. These missions are the price he pays for the safety of his loved ones, including his sister, who is held as a hostage to ensure his compliance. His primary motivations are rooted in freeing himself and those he loves from the academy's control. This means finding a way to rescue his sister and later, protecting Mikan from suffering the same kind of exploitation he has endured. His physical condition deteriorates throughout the series as a direct consequence of using his powers.

Natsume’s defining ability is his Fire Alice, which grants him the power to create and manipulate flames at will. This ability is exceptionally strong and destructive, making him the only student in the elementary division to hold the rank of Special Star and an executive position. However, this great power comes with a terrible cost. His Alice is of a life-shortening type, meaning that every time he uses his fire, it places immense stress on his body and directly reduces his lifespan. This leads to frequent nosebleeds, episodes of coughing up blood, and even moments of unconsciousness, underscoring the grim reality that his powers are slowly killing him. This lethality is the very reason he is classified as a member of the Dangerous Ability class and why he must wear the limiting piercings on his ears, as well as a cat mask that serves as a painful restraint during missions.
