Description
Akao Hiiragi is the central protagonist of the Tokyo arc in the Jinki:Extend narrative. She is a young woman living in Japan whose past is shrouded in mystery, as she suffers from amnesia and cannot remember anything from before three years prior to the story's start. This memory loss is directly connected to the same timeframe as the catastrophic events known as the Lost Life Phenomenon, which caused worldwide destruction. Her life changes dramatically when a man named Ryohei approaches her, identifying her as a Cognate, a person with the unique psychic ability required to pilot massive humanoid machines known as Jinki.
At her core, Akao is defined by a deep-seated aversion to violence and conflict. Despite being thrust into a role that demands combat, her primary motivation is not to fight but to protect the people she cares about. This pacifistic nature makes her a reluctant hero, forced to pilot her Jinki, the Moribito Type-02, in response to the escalating threat posed by a malevolent organization. Her enemies are the Hachishoujin, a group of renegade Cognates who pilot their own Jinkis and are responsible for the ongoing destruction.
The mystery of her identity is a crucial element of her character. Akao is eventually revealed to be a clone, created by a character named Kokushou. She is an artificial copy of Akana Ogawara, the late wife of another character, Genta. This revelation adds a profound layer of tragedy to her existence, as she struggles with a sense of self that is not entirely her own and a past that belongs to someone else. Her role in the story is therefore not only as a pilot defending Tokyo but also as a person grappling with the ethical and emotional implications of her own creation. Her development is closely tied to uncovering the truth of those lost three years and coming to terms with her origins as a clone.
In terms of her daily life, Akao is a second-year student at the Hinoki Academy and works as a shrine maiden at a nearby shrine, where she also lives. Her abilities are directly tied to her status as a Cognate, allowing her to psychically link with and control a Jinki. At one point, she is forcibly made the pilot of the colossal and devastating Kiribito Zai, a unit of immense power that dwarfs all others. While piloting this machine, her defensive capabilities are amplified to an incredible degree, making her nearly invulnerable to standard attacks. This situation highlights how her rare abilities make her a valuable asset and a dangerous weapon in the hands of others, forcing her to navigate a conflict much larger than herself while holding onto her desire to protect rather than destroy.
